Mr. Phillips is Princess Anne's son and the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II. Below, the King and Queen as they arrived at All Saints Church, Kemble, Circenster, about 90 minutes from Windsor.

And now for a look at the bride, NHS pediatric nurse, Harriet Sperling.

She is followed by her bridesmaids, her daughter, Georgina, and Peter Phillips' daughters, Savannah and Isla Phillips.

More from the BBC's coverage.

There were shouts of "hip hip hooray" as bride Sperling arrived along with her three bridesmaids, Phillips' children Savannah, 15, and Isla, 14, as well as Sperling's teenage daughter Georgina.

Phillips and Sperling began dating in 2024 after he split with his first wife, Autumn Kelly, in 2020. The pair's engagement was announced in August last year.

ITV's Chris Ship posted a video of the bride arriving.

A closer view of the bride, wearing an Emilia Wickstead gown, and the bridesmaids, also in Emilia Wickstead.

This is the second marriage for both the bride and groom. We learn more from this Telegraph story.

It has been just two years since the paediatric nurse, a devout Christian, made her public debut at the Badminton Horse Trials, hand in hand with her new beau, the Princess Royal’s 48-year-old son Peter Phillips. The pair had only recently met, through their daughters, at a local sports fixture in Gloucestershire, but it was immediately clear this was no fleeting romance.

And details about the ceremony come from this Hello article.

Her bridal bouquet, created by florist Millie Richardson, included sweet peas, myrtle – a tradition in Ms Sperling’s family and for the royal family – and lily of the valley.

She was walked down the aisle by her brother Nicholas Sanders, in honour of their late father Rupert Sanders. Her mother, Mary, was at the church, along with her sisters Rebecca and Louisa.

The bridesmaids' headpieces were also made with Lily of the Valley.

Below, the couple after they exchanged vows.

More about the bride's gown by Emilia Wickstead from this British Vogue piece.

The white column dress featured a square neck and a delicate lace overjacket fitted above the waist adorned with delicate wildflower embroidery across its long sleeves and sheer high neck, culminating in a captivating, almost 10 foot-long scallop-hemmed train.

“We aligned on something authentic, traditional, and modern,” the designer told British Vogue of the dress, which was crafted across several months and hundreds of hours of atelier work. It is imbued with personal symbolism and exquisite historical references: the lace pays tribute to the local florals where the bride and groom both grew up, and the train was inspired by a 19th century silhouette. As noted by Wickstead, the dress is made of Italian ivory crepe, which, while not so often seen in bridal designs, beautifully “moulds to the body.”

The Telegraph posted a video of the couple after the ceremony.

Her tiara and earrings are by Pragnell, the family-run London jeweler that designed her engagement ring.

More on the tiara via the Pragnall site.

This intricate tiara dazzles the eye by showcasing a design typical of both the Edwardian and Deco periods - which is very rare in all jewellery. Diamonds highlight a festoon of glittering laurel leaves and articulated floral motifs, bearing great resemblance to the tiara owned by The Princess Royal, in the official photograph celebrating her fiftieth birthday in 2000.

Favoured as a bridal headpiece and owned by the Pragnell family, this delicate tiara has been worn by generations of Pragnell family members and was present at the Coronation of both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.

The bride's custom ivory satin heels are by Jimmy Choo.

Below, the Princess of Wales is partially sheltered by an umbrella her husband holds over her after the ceremony wrapped up.

Now for a quick look at some of the ensembles worn by guests at today's wedding, beginning with the Queen. She was in a cream ensemble by Anna Valentine with a scalloped coat atop a coordinating dress.

The mother of the groom, seen below with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. The Princess Royal's floral yellow dress dates back to 1986; it was topped by a gold jacket and cream shawl.

Write Royalty's Patricia Treble points out that her hat was worn at Zara Tindall's christening in 1981.

We learn details about the hat from The Telegraph's column.

The hat is simple by royal standards but charming nevertheless with a slim but floppy brim with matching cord bow detail. Back in 1981, for the ceremony held at Windsor Castle, the Princess Royal, now 75, matched her yellow hat with a sweet strawberry printed dress.

The Duchess of Edinburgh wore Beulah London, the Yahvi Dress (a style the Princess of Wales has worn in green), with Prada pumps, a Jane Taylor hat, and a Sophie Habsburg bag.

Zara Tindall wore a design by the Australian brand Rebecca Vallance, the label's 'Violeta’ Bow Midi Dress ($795) in Periwinkle Blue, accessorized with a Camilla Rose Millinery headband, an Anya Hindmarch clutch and Emmy London pumps.

Thank you to Ellie at Royal British Fashion and Royal Fashion Police for sharing ID information.

Now for our look at what the Princess of Wales wore: a creamy tonal palette, beginning with the Roland Mouret Folded Collar Belted Bouclé Dress ($910, now sold out).

It is crafted from a boucle-knit (bouclé is a textured, nubby fabric) blend of polyester and acrylic. The dress features a faux-buttoning front, a folded collar with fringed trim, inverted pleats, belt loops and self-belt, slip pockets at the side seams, and a hidden back zipper. It is still available on the Roland Mouret site ($1100).

The Princess debuted a new boater-style hat by Jane Taylor London. The Hera Hat ($2217) showcases a bow worn in the back, by the Princess, and in the front on the milliner's site. It is described as being "crafted from fine straw and elegantly trimmed with a luxurious Italian satin bow. Combining refined structure with feminine detail...this lightweight headpiece is secured with a discreet comb and hair-coloured elastic...". Thank you to Laura and Kate Middleton Style for this ID.

We saw the return of the Rupert Sanderson Malory heels in kid leather (no longer available), with thanks to Middleton Maven for pointing this out.

The Princess carried her Forever New Lily Woven Clutch made of vegan-certified material with gold-tone hardware.

The Princess repeated her Kiki McDonough Morganite Earrings and triple-strand Nigel Milne pearl bracelet. The earrings were first noted at the 2017 wedding of the Princess's sister, Pippa Middleton, and James Matthews. The bracelet originally belonged to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Princess also wore a necklace that we've not seen before. Carly at Kate Middleton Style notes its similarity to Kiki McDonough's 'Grace' necklace, which showcases a round-cut white topaz gemstone surrounded by a diamond halo. The version online is shown on a chain with diamond spacers, and the Princess's chain is plain without any adornment or embellishment. I think this is a good possibility.

I will leave you with one more photo of the bride and groom as they left the church and headed to their reception at Gatcombe Park, Princess Anne's estate.

The Princess Wears Andrew Gn Gown & Lover's Knot Tiara for Nigeria State Dinner https://whatkatewore.com/2026/03/18/the-princess-wears-andrew-gn-gown-for-nigeria-state-dinner/ https://whatkatewore.com/2026/03/18/the-princess-wears-andrew-gn-gown-for-nigeria-state-dinner/#comments Thu, 19 Mar 2026 01:56:51 +0000 https://whatkatewore.com/?p=89173 The Princess wore a deep green gown by Andrew Gn for tonight's state dinner honoring the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

The banquet was held at St. George's Hall at Windsor Castle due to the extensive remodeling and refurbishment project at Buckingham Palace. Below is a photo of the King, Queen, President Tinubu, and the First Lady.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Princess, and Prince William. The Duchess of Edinburgh wasn't in attendance tonight. I do know she has been traveling quite a bit, most recently to New York and Italy.

In this image, you can see the Princess Royal on the right, and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, seen on the left. You can just make out the Duchess of Gloucester.

A brief video showing their walk into St. George's Hall.

More on tonight's dinner from ITV's coverage:

Mr Tinubu’s stay is the first incoming state visit by a Muslim leader during Ramadan since 1928 when King George V hosted King Amanullah Khan of Afghanistan.

The President broke his fast privately at sunset before joining the Royal Family for the banquet. The First Lady is a Christian and an ordained Pentecostal pastor.

For the first time in living memory, canapes were offered ahead of the dinner to offer sustenance to Muslim guests who were unable to partake in iftar – the breaking of their fast.

Here, you get a sense of the massive table in the hall, which measures more than 150 feet; more than 140 candles were used for the dinner.

More about the preparations and the flowers from this People story.

Palace staff started work setting up the table on Sunday and continued to make preparations until shortly before the dinner began. Among the last things to be added were the magnificent flower arrangements using blooms from the gardens at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Savill Garden in Windsor. Any flowers that cannot be reused after the banquet will be donated to Floral Angels, Queen Camilla's patronage, which delivers flowers to hospices, elderly care homes, shelters and more.

In this photo, I believe guests are standing for the countries' national anthems.

ITV reports the menu included:

  • Soft-boiled quail egg tartlet with watercress, kale, and a basil sabayon

  • Filet of turbot, lobster mousse wrapped in spinach, beurre blanc sauce, sprouting broccoli with hollandaise sauce, fricasse of peas and broad beans, Jersey Royal potatoes

  • Iced blackcurrant souffle with red fruit coulis

Almost one thousand knives and forks were used for tonight's table service.

The Princess laughing with a member of the Nigerian delegation.

The Daily Mail has details on tonight's beverages in this article.

English sparkling wine was used for the toasts for those who were drinking alcohol, and the menu did not include meat.

You can see President Tinubu drinking orange juice in this photo, and the Princess sipping on water.

King Charles and President Tinubu delivered remarks. The Telegraph offers more on the King's speech.

The King’s banquet speech, customarily a mixture of serious diplomacy and jokes, included the “Yoruba wisdom” of “rain does not fall on one roof alone”, the Hausa saying “when the music changes, so does the dance” and the Igbo “knowledge is never complete, two heads are better than one”.

Speaking of a “tea and jollof” reception he hosted at St James’s Palace last week, the King entered the famous debate over which country is home to the best rice dish: “I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best: Nigerian, of course... or perhaps Ghanaian or Senegalese. Diplomatically, I cannot remember.”

Sky News offers about one minute of the speech in this video.

Now, for a quick review of what some royal guests were wearing, beginning with the gentlemen, all of whom sported the formal red Windsor uniform, with its distinctive scarlet collar and cuffs on the jacket.

The Queen was in a cream embroidered gown by Fiona Clare, the late Queen's Belgian Sapphire Tiara with matching earrings, and a diamond necklace that belonged to her mother.

We now turn to our look at what Kate wore.

Her dress very much looks like a bespoke version of Andrew Gn's Chiffon Pleated Gown in a bespoke color, with thanks to Laura and UFO No More for a speedy ID.

The 100% silk design is from the designer's F/W 2021 collection, featuring a high neck, puffed blouson sleeves, pleating at the front neck and all around the waist, and a concealed back zipper. The Princess did not wear the pearl-buckled belt shown with the off-the-rack version of the style.

As many readers may know, green is one of the two primary colors seen in Nigeria's flag—more from this GB News story.

The colours carry clear meaning; green represents Nigeria’s rich natural wealth, especially its forests and agriculture, while white symbolises peace and unity.

Middleton Maven connected with the designer online. More from her Instagram post.

Andrew Gn confirms that he created this gown for the Princess of Wales in 2022, before retiring in 2023. He describes it as part of a belief in “heritage design” — beautifully made pieces to be treasured and passed down to the next generation, much like jewelry.

Below, the designer at the conclusion of his 2019 runway show.

More about Mr. Gn from Women’s Wear Daily.

While he’s dressed everyone from Queen Rania of Jordan to Lady Gaga, the genial designer has kept a relatively low public profile so far, preferring to cultivate close personal relationships with his customers. Early in his career, trunk shows introduced him to society doyennes such as Lynn Wyatt, Blaine Trump and Susan Gutfreund.

Moving to the Princess's accessories, we look at her go-to tiara, Queen Mary's Lover's Knot. As Vogue reports, "The Lover's Knot Tiara was commissioned for Queen Mary in 1913 from Britain's House of Garrard. It consists of diamonds and a collection of 19 hanging pearls, all set in silver and gold."

The Princess also wore the Queen Mother’s Sapphire and Diamond Fringe Earrings. They showcase a central faceted sapphire with round and baguette diamonds, along with a distinctive fringe of diamonds suspended from the bottom of the sapphire. I show them below as worn in December 2021 to the Christmas Carol service; there weren't great photos of jewelry tonight.

We first saw her wearing the glittering gems with an Erdem gown for the 2015 100 Women in Hedge Funds dinner.

She wore her sash and star of the Royal Victorian Order, as well as the Royal Family Order of King Charles III. Below, you see the cross and star at an earlier function, and the Royal Family Order as worn tonight.

It looked like the Princess repeated her Manolo Blahnik ‘Hangisi’ 105 Satin Pumps in Emerald Green. The style is still available at FWRD in limited sizes ($1195), at Farfetch in limited sizes ($1281), and at Cettire ($1279).
The shoe was first noticed in an official portrait unveiled in June 2022.
We saw the return of the Jenny Packham 'Casa' Clutch (no longer available), a trapezoid-shaped bag in platinum lamĂ© with a crystal-encrusted clasp.

On a related note, many readers will recall the vibrant green Andrew Gn design worn by the Princess for Trooping the Colour in 2023. From the designer’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection, it is shown as being crafted in a blend of viscose, acetate, and silk.

The tailored design showcased a slim fit, a satin placket, collar, pocket trim, and cuffs. The Princess dispensed with the ruffled trim at the collar and cuffs.

It turns out a friend of mine saw the Princess's design, or prototype, in person at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

My friend, Faith, shared photos from the exhibition titled Andrew Gn: Fashioning the World.
More about the designer and the exhibit from Harvard Magazine.
Born to immigrant parents in Singapore in 1966, Gn (pronounced “gin” with a hard “g”) was encouraged to travel and ultimately studied in Paris, New York City, and Milan before founding his Paris atelier, The House of Andrew Gn, in 1995. What “began simply in his apartment with an assistant and a sewing machine,” Slinkard says, grew into a 28-year business that produced 80 collections and some 10,000 ensembles. One of the few independent fashion houses to succeed financially, the atelier (which closed in 2023) is known for rich ornamentation, impeccable materials, and the artist’s disparate global aesthetic
Two more photos from the exhibit.
And from the museum's description of the exhibition.
Making its North American debut, Andrew Gn: Fashioning the World illuminates the designer’s life and legacy, showcasing nearly 100 stunning works, including clothing, accessories, original illustrations and digital media. The experience is divided into thematic sections highlighting the designer’s signature blend of Western aesthetics, art history and Asian decorative art and design.
The exhibit runs through April 5, so those on the East Coast still have time to see it. Here is an interview with the designer that runs roughly 2-œ minutes.

The Princess of Wales in Jenny Packham and a Surprise Tiara at State Dinner https://whatkatewore.com/2025/12/03/the-princess-of-wales-in-jenny-packham-and-a-surprise-tiara-at-state-dinner/ https://whatkatewore.com/2025/12/03/the-princess-of-wales-in-jenny-packham-and-a-surprise-tiara-at-state-dinner/#comments Thu, 04 Dec 2025 03:39:04 +0000 https://whatkatewore.com/?p=88217 The Princess of Wales debuted a new gown at tonight's state dinner, but the real news was the tiara she chose to wear with her ensemble.

The banquet honoring Germany's state visit to the UK was held in St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle. (Buckingham Palace refurbishing precludes holding events there at this time.) Below, the King, Queen, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and his wife, Elke BĂŒdenbender.

As has become customary, Kensington Palace released a posed photo just as the dinner was getting underway.

Other royals in attendance included the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester also attended this evening's banquet. Below, you see the Duchess as she processed to St. George's Hall.

Another view of the Prince and Princess as they walked to the banquet.

Rebecca English of The Daily Mail posted a brief video as people processed to dinner.

A total of 152 people attended tonight's gala.

This Hello story offers background on the dinner service.

Royal staff spent five days setting up the table with pieces from the Grand Service from the Royal Collection, a silver-gilt dinner service dating back to 1811 which includes dinner plates, tureens, dessert stands, and candelabra, influenced by Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Oriental styles.

We learn more about the guest list from The Telegraph's coverage.

German supermodel Claudia Schiffer and her filmmaker husband Sir Matthew Vaughn will be among the guests on Wednesday evening.

Other famous names with German heritage or connections include movie-score composer Hans Zimmer, Strictly judge Motsi Mabuse, who lives in Germany, and children’s book illustrator Axel Scheffler, known for bringing the much-loved character The Gruffalo to life in his drawings.

Ms. Schiffer.

We get specifics on the menu from this People article.

The dinner menu included ingredients from the royal estates, such as Windsor partridge. And the choice of one of the wines, Chateau la Fleur-Petrus, Pomerol, was from 1995 — the year that the president and his wife were married. The evening's cocktail, crafted especially for the event with nods to their German guests, featured cherry brandy (a throwback to the first time Charles drank alcohol at school), flavored with cherry and chocolate meant to evoke Black Forest Gateau.

St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle also featured a special holiday touch for the German state banquet: a Christmas tree adorned with lights and gold ornaments!

The King delivered remarks.

The Daily Mail has details in this piece.

In a warm and witty speech, the King highlighted the many centuries of history between Britain and Germany and current trading links, notably in the automobile industry.

He joked to huge laughter: 'Even the distinguished representatives of the German automotive industry here this evening, with their cars containing all the latest technology, highest safety, greatest luxury, and new green technologies, would have looked in awe at you, Herr BundesprÀsident, as you travelled this afternoon in the most comfortable and lowest emissions vehicle in the world: the horse-drawn Royal Carriage! It might only be six horsepower, but sometimes a simpler vehicle is all one needs.'

Turning to more serious matters, the King highlighted the marriage between Queen Victoria and his German-born great, great, great, grandfather, Prince Albert, who brought so many traditions to the UK that are still followed today.

And more on President Steinmeier's remarks from The Mail's story.

The German president replied with an equally warm address in which he referred to his own love of British music and listening to the British Forces Broadcasting Service as a teenager.

He also said that even those things that divided us – football, beer, lawns and our sense of humour – also demonstrated that the two countries actually shared the same passions.

There were toasts.

A quick look at what some of the women in attendance wore begins with the Queen, in a deep teal lace gown by Fiona Clare. Her jewelry included the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, an emerald-and-diamond necklace, and earrings from her own collection. The Court Jeweller reports that the necklace is believed to come from the Greville bequest and also notes that the Queen wore "a stack of the late Queen Mother's Art Deco bracelets."

The Duchess of Edinburgh was in a bespoke gown by Suzannah London, accessorized by the Wessex Aquamarine tiara, and her Graff Nuage sapphire and diamond flower earrings and necklace, and an Anya Hindmarch "Maud" clutch.

And now for the Princess of Wales. She wore a shimmering bespoke Jenny Packham caped gown featuring an asymmetric neckline, fitted bodice with pleating at the waist, padded shoulders, and sheer cape. The dress's fabric is embellished with sequins and crystals in an ombrĂ© pattern, while the tulle is only lightly covered in sequins.

As mentioned above, the big news was seeing the Princess in the Oriental Circlet Tiara, a piece worn only once by Queen Elizabeth II, and not seen publicly since that occasion in 2005.

More from Patricia Treble in her Write Royalty piece.

This tiara has only been worn by queens. Until now.

It was originally designed for Queen Victoria in 1853, and Prince Albert is believed to have been involved in its creation by Garrard, which describes its style as an “Indian-inspired design of lotus flowers and Mughal arches.”

It was originally set with opals, which Garrard says were one of his favourite gemstones. In 1902, Queen Alexandra had the opals replaced with rubies. She is believed to have worn it once, on a state visit to Germany, which could explain why it was worn tonight by the Princess of Wales to the state banquet of the German President.

The tiara choice also makes sense when remembering Prince Albert's German heritage. If you look at the photo on the right, you can see this is a larger tiara than any others worn by the Princess, just in terms of how much of the head is covered by the structure itself.

Here you see Queen Elizabeth II wearing the tiara at a state dinner in Malta in 2005, believed to be the only time she wore it.

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, shared a photo he took of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wearing the tiara in 1984.

The Princess wore the Royal Family Order of King Charles III and the insignia of the Royal Victorian Order.  A Dame Grand Cross is the equivalent of a Knighthood for a male member of the Order—more from a 2019 People story.

The sash signifies her position as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, the highest ranking of chivalry personally awarded by the Queen for being in her service. The order is also represented by a Maltese cross, which Kate wore near the bottom of the sash.

The Royal Victorian Order was created by Queen Victoria in 1896 to allow her to recognize people who helped her or represented her. The ruling monarch personally selects who is given the honor.

Above right, you see close-ups of Queen Elizabeth's chandelier-style earrings. The wise folks at Her Majesty’s Jewel Vault (no longer active) describe them as having “three thin strands of round and baguette diamonds supporting a large pear-shaped diamond pendant and a diamond arc below; at the very bottom rests a fringe of three additional strands of round and baguette diamonds.”

The Princess brought back her Rania 105 Embellished Pumps ($2695) in silver by Gianvito Rossi. The heels are crafted in sheer silk organza with suede detailing and hand-embellished with 4500 shimmering crystals. First worn during the 2022 Caribbean tour, they are a point-toe style with a 4.1" heel.

She carried her Anya Hindmarch "Maud" Clutch ($775).

Here is one more photo from tonight's dinner.

If you missed today's first post, you will find it here.
