Prince George’s Christening Set, Reiss Fall Styles & Whistles Spring 2014

NOTE: This is an abbreviated post due to technical issues.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are back with a brief bit of news and then some style-watching.

Many readers are likely to have already heard that Prince George will be christened on Wednesday, October 23 at 11am (that’s 6am EDT, 3am PDT). The ceremony will be at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace. More from Richard Palmer’s story in the Express:

The Prince, who is third-in-line to the throne, will be three months and one day old.

Afterwards, however, there will be photographs released of William, Kate, and their baby son.

Aides expect they will include an historic picture of the Queen with three future monarchs – her son Charles, grandson William, and great grandson George.

The Archbishop said he is “…delighted to conduct the baptism“. The Chapel Royal is where Princess Diana’s coffin lay for nearly a week following her death in 1997.  The most recent christening of a royal baby at the Chapel Royal was Princess Beatrice’s in 1988.

Also this week, Clarence House shared news that William and Kate have a new coat of arms, officially it is the Conjugal Coat of Arms.

Some may recall the news that Prince William is at the helm of a new non-profit, United for Wildlife.

In his role with the organization the Prince shot PSAs (Public Service Announcement) for Wild Aid with David Beckham and Yao Ming. Knowing that William is rather tall I thought you might enjoy seeing how tall basketball legend Yao Ming is.

The PSAs are part of a campaign to draw attention to the illegal trade in ivory products and the peril to the elephant and rhinoceros populations.

We wrap up with a look ahead to the Whistles Spring/Summer 2014 collection. The label held its runway show at London Fashion Week.  From the Women’s Wear Daily review:

The plains and wildlife of Africa inspired this first runway outing from the British high street retailer. Soft savannah shades met with the sugared pink and minty greens of a lovebird’s plumage, while crisp whites were laminated to look like leopard print. Stiff raffia fabrics were woven into an elegant, oversized coat paired with a jumpsuit. Precision tailoring in dresses, and a strapless playsuit, were among the highlights of this strong collection.

For the first time pieces from the collection are being offered at Moda Operandi, the online site allowing shoppers the opportunity to pre-order looks straight from the runway.  Below, the Hiromi Midi Stripe dress ($820) and the pink Dari Sculpted Raffia Dress ($425).

NOTE: With apologies, I am going to abruptly end the post here. My computer has died a sudden death, and I am borrowing a crippled computer saved for parts. Not knowing how many days it will be before I have a new computer up and running, along with the fact the Moda Operandi pre-sale ends October 3rd, makes this seem the prudent choice. Many thanks in advance for your patience.

I must say that I giggled while reading the annotations on the new crest: pairing a translation of the Order of the Garter motto with "two white chevrons, to symbolize the family's love of skiing" just strikes me as humorous. All jokes aside, bully for them. I'm American, but I'm honest enough to admit that I would like a Coat of Arms myself! And I'm so lacking in pedigree that I wouldn't even be able to truthfully incorporate white chevrons.

I'm partial to the Reiss collection. It may be very similar to their past collections, but I haven't been following them long enough to notice. I never would have paired the black and red plaid coat with rose pants, but the color combination doesn't bother me; in fact, I think it looks fresh!

Oh, dear. I hope your computer problems are soon resolved. I'm posting this in the realization it may not show up anywhere, but nothing ventured ....

I'm not utterly excited by the Reiss collection this autumn. Perhaps I've been looking at Reiss too long, because the pieces look like the same-old same-old to me. I did buy a coat last year, and to my interest, it fits right into this year's trends, so I suppose Reiss's designers were prescient. However, this year's coats do nothing for me.

That pink and black Whistles dress is interesting, and I like the pinstriped menswear coat, too, though I tend to eschew pinstripes. The Morgana midi dress is lovely -- clean and streamlined, just my style. It's a Duchess possibility for certain, if she starts dropping her hemlines. I've done it myself with a few purchases, as lower hemlines have become fashionable over the past year, though you have to be careful. Anything longer than just below the knee can look dowdy and hit the calf at the most unflattering point. The Duchess, with her long waist and short legs, would want to be especially careful about proportions.

Hi, Susan, I am so happy to have found a look-alike for the Temperley Odele Sheepskin Coat. This Michael Kors coat, while not sheepskin, is very similar. It is currently on sale at Macy's in all sizes for about $210. Here is the link for those who are interested:
