A New Family Photo, Kate-Related Black Friday Sales & Savings

We have a few quick updates before diving into the Sales & Savings being offered by Kate-centric retailers this holiday weekend. Our first tidbit is about the new family photo shared on social media late Wednesday afternoon, a story many readers have probably already seen.

Jason Bell via @HotMonarchy Twitter Feed

Blogger Hot Monarchy shared the photo on Tumblr and on Twitter.

There was quite the scramble as royal followers tried to determine when the picture was taken. Hello! Canada’s Dave Lee helped on Twitter:

The Daily Mail’s Rebecca English also offered insight, again via Twitter:

More from Rebecca English’s column about the picture in The Daily Mail:

A Kensington Palace spokesman confirmed that members of the Royal Family frequently sent photographs of themselves as gifts to members of the public.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said last night: ‘I can confirm it is a photo the Duke and Duchess used as official gifts on their tour to New Zealand and Australia. It was taken by Jason Bell before the tour.’

If interested in the darling sweater Prince George is wearing in the photo, visit What Prince George Wore for the details.

Kate did a little shopping in the community of Holt yesterday. The Eastern Daily Press had more (the story has been removed from the site):

Chloe Nelson who co-owns Nelson’s Eye Patch in the town spotted the Duchess of Cambridge in the town’s High Street just after 1pm.

She said: “She looked lovely in a tartan cape as she left the Antiques Emporium and headed up the high street, what a great ambassador for shopping in local independent shops.”

The Duchess was wearing the cape seen in this photo from February of 2013.

We were never able to determine if the cape was from Orvis, shown below left and center, or Zara, shown below right.

Also, there was word from the Palace today that Prince William will be traveling solo to China and Japan early next year. There had been some chatter that the Duchess would be going with William, this verifies that is not the case.

On now to our litany of retailers using the holiday weekend (in the US) to jump-start sales. We begin with Links of London; the jeweler is discounting all purchases 20% promotion until Sunday night at midnight.

Links of London

Links of London

Kate is incredibly photogenic, she looks gorgeous. I love that suit, it’s one of those rare deux piece that manages to look fashionable and youthful. Great picture – though I would have posed George in the middle.
Thanks Susan for all your effort. Only 6 days until tour! Yey!

I’m inclined to think she was wearing the Orvis cape – you can see the opening for the front pocket which doesnt appear in the photograph of the Zara cape.

I am inclined to think it is the Orvis as well. Another detail: if you look at the photo of the Duchess, the cape appears lined all the way to the bottom hem (a feature of the Orvis one but not the Zara as best I can tell).

That’s a charming photograph, but children change so quickly at this age that Prince George could look entirely different now! I’m hoping that there might be a Christmas photo, since it would be interesting to see whether he still looks as much like his mother’s family as he did. For a while there during the Down Under tour and in the birthday photos, I kept seeing his Aunt Pippa in his face.

Every year I swear I won’t buy any clothes for myself in the pre-Christmas sales, and every year my resolve crumbles. At least Zara doesn’t do much damage, but certain other retailers do. Alas.

The advantage of Zara is that it’s no big deal if the gamble doesn’t pay off — I’m only looking for a jacket to throw on for a quick dash to the local shop during the winter months. I’m caught because the styles I like are coming up too dressy and tailored for the purpose and I’m experimenting with different labels.

And I don’t like capes — they’re for duchesses who have doors opened and cars driven for them.

I’d like a cape but I could see it all: leap out of the car, slam the door, trap cape, dash off, come to a grinding halt, possibly with ripping sound… so I won’t be treating myself to one of those 🙂

My problem with capes is how uncomfortable it makes me feel on my neck…
As for Zara, i finally made peace with myself that this brand is not for me. 🙂

I love long opera-length capes, but the short ones always seem to cut people in two in unflattering ways. At least in my eyes.

But the opera-length capes present even greater perils than the short ones. One imagines Isadora Duncan-style catastrophes involving taxis (and door-trapped capes) speeding away from hapless (if dramatically-and-glamorously-garbed) fashionistas, literally snatching them off their feet and towards an appalling end on the pavement.

My conservatory-trained and concert-singer grandmother’s black velvet, ivory-watered-silk-lined evening cape sits in my dressing room, where I occasionally murmer endearments to its beauty and even put it on but never contemplate actually WEARING it anywhere.

Thank you for such a wonderful tale, Lili! Capes are not for today’s city folk, I think, it does require the presence of door-openers and chauffeurs to improve life expectancy, as described.

My own favourite — when I actually go to opera as well as other evening events — is a navy swing-back edge-to-edge jacket. I find it’s enough of a cape-quality without risking life-and-limb.

Please give my best regards to that beautiful cape which clearly enjoys the very great respect it deserves.

Your grandmother’s cape sounds wonderful. Give it a stroke for me!
Perhaps one has to slow down and take life elegantly and with a good measure of dignity and decorum – to avoid the Isadora Duncan moment.
I’m too old a leopard to change spots, although the fact I can still dash here and there with energy is perhaps something to relish and enjoy. Maybe dignity will come with old age 🙂

I love the family portrait! I have to say that I find it kind of disappointing to never see Prince William carrying Prince George. It always seems to be Kate’s job, and I’m not sure if it’s an old-school tradition kind of thing, but it is somewhat surprising considering that we’re in 2014.

I don’t know if it’s that or George just prefers to be in his mom’s arms. I have both nieces and nephews that tend to gravitate to one parent over the other a majority of the time. I think it’s just children’s nature.

Love the new pic of George, especially his smart jacket. Also a pleasure to see Kate able to make use of a familiar item, it must be a pleasant break from all the smart stuff that is now a necessary part of her life. It looks a pretty and handy little cape, whichever one it is.

I tried, I really tried, to whizz through all the sales info as fast as poss — but tragically my eye was still drawn in to the word Zara — and I was undone. Plastic has been in use and a parcel is in the post as I write. Thanks for a great post!

Cape update: although the listing is still live at Orvis, the cape itself is sold out. However, Orvis has a number of other capes. They are big this year, and the hot one is a Burberry cape that can be personalized. (It’s a little too showy for Kate, though.)

Does Kate’s cape have red lines on it? It looks to me like it does… And from the Orvis/Zara pictures of the cape, it looks like the one from Orvis has red lines while Zara’s does not. Anyone else see that?

I can see a red line in both. To me it definitely looks like the Zara cape, it’s black/grey rather than brown.

If you enlarge the photos by 500%, you’ll see red lines in all three capes — Kate’s cape, the Orvis cape and the one by Zara. If I had to place a bet, I’d go with Zara. Even though we can’t see pockets on the model’s Zara cape, that could simply be caused by the model’s pose.
