It’s Spicy Orange on the Slopes as Royal Tour Wraps Up in Norway

Kate and William were in cold weather gear for their final engagements in Norway.

After a private lunch with Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, it was time for a change into sportier (and warmer) attire for activities at Holmenkollen National Ski Area.

Kate and CP Mette-Marit.

The two couples posed for formal pictures.

I thought this was a lovely shot of the Duke and Duchess and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

Many will recognize the iconic Holmenkollen Ski JumpThe area is also home to cross-country skiing facilities and the Ski Museum. The Duke and Duchess, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit visited the Museum this afternoon; more from the official Royal Court story about the day:

The Ski Museum at Holmenkollen houses exhibitions on the most renowned polar expeditions, including the race to the South Pole between Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott in 1911–1912. The Duke and Duchess viewed that exhibition and spent some time looking at Queen Maud’s skiing equipment.

In his piece for The Evening Standard Robert Jobson reports “…they marveled at an outfit for a tiny nine-month-old skier and saw a variety of Royal ski suits through the last century.”

Next, the ski jump.

Kate and William as they arrive at the top of the jump.

In her People story Erin Hill writes, “With stunning panoramic views over the city, the ski jump is truly impressive in its size, and has capacity for more than 70,000 spectators.”

From The Daily Mail’s coverage:

They went to the top of the ski jump at Holmenkollen in the snowy hills above the Norwegian capital to experience the nation’s love of the great wintry outdoors, cross country skiing, and ski jumping – the sport that made Eddie the Eagle Edwards an unlikely star.

We return to the Royal Court story

Former ski jumping World Champion Runa Velta and ski jumper Anniken Mork spoke with the British guests about what it takes to perform a long ski jump.

Back to the Evening Standard story

Standing on a balcony at the start house 210 ft above the ground, they watched Norwegian ski jumper Anniken Mork race down the track at 56mph before taking a leap of faith towards the ground 194ft below and landing gracefully more than 120 yards later near the bottom of the course.

I believe this video from Richard Palmer of The Express shows the jump.

The Telegraph reports “The Duchess clapped with delight as she landed safely, and the Duke said: “Wow. That was amazing.”

Everyone then watched a demonstration by some of Norway’s best under-18 ski jumpers.

The Royals also enjoyed a little snowball throwing while atop the ski jump.

Everyone then walked to the final engagement of the day.

It was an event organized by the Norwegian Ski Federation, watched children in a ski school class and then taking part in a cookout with them.

Kate and Mette-Marit with some of the little ones.

Back to The Telegraph article by Hannah Furness:

The Duchess was certain that the couple’s children, Prince George, four, and two-year-old Princess Charlotte, would have delighted in the stunning surroundings.

“She said their children would love to be here and that it is a nice place,” said Line Hansen, manager of the kindergarten at Ovresetertjern, near Oslo. “She said that George tried skiing last year but he was just two and a half so was just starting.”

I love the little guy on the right in this picture.

Here is a cute video from Simon Perry of People.

One of the activities was cooking sausages.

From The Telegraph:

They baked a simple bread mixture – called pinnebrod – wrapped around a stick and sausages.

“They were asking the children their names and what they like about kindergarten and about what we were cooking,” Hansen adds.

This young man is keeping a close eye on Kate’s cooking.

A quick video.

The children were given flags from Norway and the United Kingdom.

So they could give Kate and William a rousing sendoff.

Now to what Kate wore.

The Duchess was in a down jacket by Kjus.

The brand was co-founded by Norwegian Lase Kjus, an Olympic gold medalist, and world champion skier. Kate’s style is the Duana in ‘spicy orange’ and white. The jacket is fitted, down-filled, with a front zip, adjustable cuff zippers, neck gaiter, multiple zippered pockets, 4-way stretch lining, mesh shoulder inserts and a detachable hood.

Here you see the thumb-loop cuffs and one of the pocket zippers.

It is still shown as available at Net a Porter ($900) in limited sizes. Cole Sport also has it in stock.

Our thanks to Giulia for identifying the jacket!

Thank you to Bianca on the FB page for her quick ID of what was likely Kate’s sweater beneath her parka. Here is a bit of the collar beneath Kate’s jacket.

Bianca remembered Kate was given a sweater by King Harald and Queen Sonja, a piece by Norwegian heritage brand Dale of Norway. The company is known for its soft, pure wool sweaters.

Kate’s sweater is somewhat similar to this style from the Dale of Norway 2014 Sochi Games kit. The biggest distinction is that the gifted sweaters have cream or ivory bodies with colored sleeves and collars; the color scheme seen below is just the opposite.

Kudos also to Middleton Maven for her detective work on the sweater, and for sharing the photo of the gifts received by William and Kate.

Kate wore her Sorel Tivoli boots again; they are currently on sale at Sorel for $94.90, discounted from $130.

It looks like they’re available to pre-order on the Net-a-Porter US site, judging by this graphic.

Kate wore a new hat today by Barts, the Jasmine Beanie. The piece is an acrylic/wool/nylon blend.

We show it at Ultimate Outdoors in the UK (£ 21.25, about $30). UPDATE FEB 3: The hat is still available in ivory at Cotswold Outdoor US as of Saturday morning, and Amazon US has it in other colors. Thank you to Erin, Hannah and Janet E for their hat links! (It seems the ‘Kate effect’ continues full speed, by this morning the hat was sold out at several of the links people shared last night!)

Our thanks to Sophia and Katherine Elizabeth for the quick hat ID.

Thank you to everyone who made the tour such a treat to cover. We’ll do our usual follow-up polls, I’m thinking one on casual styles, one on ‘daywear,’ and one on the evening looks. Be sure to comment with any other suggestions you might have, the input would be terrific. And we’ll be doing our “what we missed” post as well.

@ElizaMo

Thanks so much, especially for being nice enough to include measurements.

The crazy Boden sizing problem you shared is exactly what prompted me to ask you about the sizing.

When something doesn't fit, paying for the return shipping is what bugs me the most - and I'm not a cheap person! I know Amazon Prime has spoiled me.

I have now sadly resorted to buying certain items (i.e. a new designer or an international brand) in several sizes simply to make sure something will fit me. However, I always end up at the post office, paying a premium sum to return the four sweaters/dresses/blouses that didn't fit because of wacky sizing charts and manufacturing processes. Ahhhhh! The challenges of being a CopyKate! ?

As always, thank you Susan for "gifting" so many of us with this site. Whether we are commenting on terrific color choices or cumulatively wondering about hemlines, I cannot express to you how amazing it is to be able to virtually gather and converse with others about Kate's fashion choices. I suspect I'm not the only one who wakes up in the morning (or stays up late, depends on your time zone) and immediately heads to this page for the latest and greatest.

Ah, we can always count on Kate to look great in a casual ensemble. :)

Sorry for bombarding you with a dozen of my comments to moderate at once, Susan :P Had to catch up today after a hectic week! I'm amazed you manage to get such detailed posts up during tours, with all the outfit changes and new designers and background info on different countries, yet still keep the comments section civil even with an increase in traffic. Great job and thanks for being so wonderfully reliable! I love to get updates on all of Kate's events here instead of having to search for a handful of articles. You always include such enjoyable videos and quotes as well.

Susan thank you so, so much for all of your hard work! Your coverage of this tour has been outstanding and probably the highlight of my winter. I always love how much I learn from your posts about each event, apart from the clothes.

As an aside, does anyone know if KP released any information about what type of pants she’s wearing in these pics?

Thank you again and I hope you get some well-deserved rest now!

Thank you, Susan, for an amazing four days of reporting (and comment moderating)! You really kept us up to date on everything that happened and all that was worn.

Except for that awful yellow Erdem and the Seraphine dress, Kate really hit it out of the ballpark for me. I think this tour has been her best yet in terms of good choices (except that horrible Erdem...)

I would like to echo Ülkü in saying that this site is a wonderful place for me to meet like-minded people who care about Kate and William, since most people I know IRL aren't even sure who they are ("Is that the crown prince? Oh, the son? When did he get married - does he have any kids? Who's Kate?") and are certainly not interested in what Kate wears. So thanks again for all your hard work, Susan.

Many thanks Susan for all the prompt and accurate updates, it's so very much appreciated. Living in Sydney, Australia, we don't see the 'white stuff' here, let alone require this type of clothing. So, the tours in the snow (for me anyway) are a fashion treat.
