News About Kate’s First Solo TV Interview, a New Patronage, Calendar Updates & Poll Results

Hello and Happy February, it’s good to be back posting again. Today we have several newsbytes to share, followed by a look at some of our poll results.

We begin with word about Kate’s first-ever solo television interview, part of an upcoming broadcast about HM’s birthday. More from Levi Winchester’s story in The Express:

THE DUCHESS of Cambridge has given her first solo television interview for a special programme marking the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The Duchess was interviewed by broadcaster Tom Bradby, who also spoke to Kate and Prince William on the day their engagement was announced in November 2010.

But her latest television venture marks her first solo moment in front of the camera, with a now more experienced Duchess having made charity videos and taken part in many royal events at home and abroad.

This should be a fascinating program; in part because of Kate’s interview, but also because producers have been granted “close access” to the Queen and other royals over the past year. Any sort of look offering footage from ‘behind the curtain’ is fascinating; I would anticipate video of Kate not previously seen. Others interviewed for the documentary include Prince William, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. The program is 2 hours in length and will air on ITV; no date has been announced for the broadcast, only that it will air in ‘the spring’. The program’s working title is The Queen at Ninety.

Next, updates to Kate’s calendar.

  • Sunday, 7 Feb:  In her first engagement as Honorary Commandant of the RAF Cadets Kate attends a church service and reception in recognition of the Cadets’ 75th anniversary. The service will be at St. Clement Danes in Westminster, that is the Central Church of the Royal Air Force. We do not yet know the location for the reception.
  • We have updated the Calendar page to include several of the events honoring the Queen’s 90th birthday. As of yet there are no confirmed appearances by other royals at the varying functions, with the exception of special activities planned during the Royal Windsor Horse Show May 11 – May 15. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will attend the final show on Sunday, May 15th, for a pageant in honor of HM’s birthday. I would look for William, Kate and other senior royals to be at the event in light of this post on the Monarchy’s website:  The Queen and Members of the Royal Family will attend a pageant celebrating The Queen’s life to be held at Home Park in Windsor Castle.”

We will keep you posted about these events moving forward. It is a busy spring with the state visit from Spain in March, the tour, and all of the events honoring HM’s 90th birthday.

Our other newsbyte involves another patronage for the Duchess: Roya Nikkhah reports in The Sunday Times that Kate will be taking over the Queen’s patronage of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, the organization that hosts the annual Wimbledon tennis championships. Below you see Ms. Nikkhah’s tweet about the story. (Ms. Nikkhah is highly accurate, one reason I am sharing details of her story.)

Her Majesty has been patron of the organization for an amazing 64 years.Below you see her at the Championships in 1957, presenting Althea Gibson of the US with the Gold Salver after she defeated fellow American team member Darlene Hard to win the Women’s Singles title.

It should be a good fit, Kate’s interest in tennis is well documented. She has attended Wimbledon matches frequently, and is also a longtime tennis player. Below you see Kate arriving for Wimbledon matches over the years.

This year’s Championship runs from June 27 –  July 10th. In her Sunday Times story Ms. Nikkhah reports the announcement about the change in royal patrons is expected during this year’s championships.

We move now to results from several of our polls.

In our first poll we looked at Kate’s special occasion styles. With more than 5300 votes, your favorite is the Alexander McQueen ensemble worn for Charlotte’s christening in July.

These have all been immense fun, I always enjoy seeing how the polls turn out.

My absence the past two weeks means we now find ourselves in February without having done our annual jewelry and shoe polls. Is that something you would like to see on the site, or do you feel that too much time has elapsed and you prefer we move on to other topics? Just let me know in the comments or via email and we’ll proceed per the prevailing sentiment. It is great being back, I am excited about all of the upcoming events and activities on Kate’s calendar, not to mention the Queen’s.

More polls please, as time and family obligations allow. I've been in your shoes with ailing family several times, and diverting web sites such as yours were a welcome diversion, especially in the bleak midwinter. Thank you.

Can't wait to see what Kate wears for the church service on Sunday! Red would be striking against the interior of the church. Will she wear her favorite hat?

This is going to sound pretty stupid, but I could not figure out for the life of me how to vote? I didn't see a link anywhere. Perhaps the browser I'm using wasn't displaying something? Can somebody tell me, because I'd love to vote on future polls.

Just my 2 cents, even though I almost never post... I have been following this blog for 6 years (since the day of the engagement actually). I would be crushed if the name of the blog were to be changed! I feel the banner displays appropriate respect to her "new" title, but I agree with what others have said. Very few of my American friends have heard of "Kate Middleton" and even fewer know her as the Duchess of Cambridge. I think to change the name would only complicate things and make the blog more difficult to find.
