More from the Garden Island:

LONDON – The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, aka Prince William and his wife Kate, surprised fans at the Olympic Games tennis tournament at Wimbledon by sitting in the cheap seats on Thursday.

The royal pair… decided to shun the VIP seating available to them in favor of a regular spot in the stands while watching Great Britain’s Andy Murray play Nicolas Almagro of Spain.

William and Kate would have been eligible to sit in Center Court’s Royal Box, which is reserved for special visitors to the All England Club. But as Murray was playing his quarterfinal on Court One, they instead opted for a normal pair of seats to the left of the players’ box.

The couple was having fun this afternoon, taking part in a “Mexican Wave” several times, a practice known simply as “the wave” in the USA.

Multiple reports say the two spoke about shoes, more from Victoria Murphy’s story in the Mirror:

Kate immediately congratulated Adlington on her bronze medal in the 400m freestyle this week – but the swimmer, known for her love of shoes, had other things on her mind.

She admired Kate’s navy wedges, telling her: “I love your shoes.”

Here are the shoes under discussion.

Apparently one of the Australian athletes wanted to give Kate the kangaroo; Harry ended up with it at one point, as did William, as seen in another photo from Miss Trickett.

  1. The Stella McCartney ‘Ridley Stretch Cady Dress’ is actually available on the US Stella McCartney site in size 12

  2. Kate has great figure and a well toned body – all achievable following a healthy diet and regular exercise hence she would look good in almost anything. Nevertheless, her style is classic and classic always wins hands down.

  3. Such.Heavy.Makeup. for simply being a spectator at the Olympics.

I really like her hair in a ponytail. It’s cute and pretty. She has so many ponytail styles to choose from and she should sport it more often for casual events.

  4. I love her hair in the low pony tail with the pearl earrings. I actually love it so much I’m wearing mine the same way today. On the other hand, this tight-pants-cork-shoe nonsense has to stop.

  5. Totally agree with the people who are suggesting that ballet flats or cute little sneakers would have looked better and been a thousand times more practical! At first I thought the wedges looked good, but after seeing the photo where she needs two people (William and another man) to help her negotiate the seating, I thought they weren’t the smartest choice.

What does everyone think – will Kate give up her towering platforms and high heels if she becomes pregnant? Or will she do a Snooki and continue to wobble around in them?

    • I dont think she “wobbles” at all. As for needing two people at the velodome, she was attempting to step across the back of a seat—She was not just walking up and down the aisle of the stadium. I would need help to do that no matter what shoes I was wearing.

    • It doesn’t appear that Kate wobbles in her high heeled shoes. I just think that with her skinny jeans the flats are a better look. However, being pregnant can throw off one’s center of gravity and I certainly expect that she will use good sense in what to wear.

  6. The sweater/top Kate has on at the Olympic Village visit is the same one she wore to watch Wm’s cousin Zara Philips win her silver medal at the Equestrian event (the classic Breton Stripes) – on 7-31.

  7. Love the photos of them embracing in the stands – just gorgeous. Not so crazy about the way the white Olympic shirt rode up to expose her midriff. A singlet worn underneath it would have taken care of that. Nonetheless, what a golden couple!

On another note, I just adore WKW! Have you ever considered doing “what William wore”? I’d just be interested in an analysis on what William’s style is. What do you think about his style? Does he wear designer or high street! Is he a “male style icon”? Does he dress himself, and what (if any) has his style evolution been – does Kate have an influence on his style?

  8. Kate looks like she is having a fabulous time!

  9. I just adore the pictures from the cycling race… such joy! They really do seem like a couple that genuinely enjoys being together. And I agree that she looks great in a ponytail! I also am liking the wedges more with the navy pants… didn’t love them with the Zara jeans at the torch relay, but have been a fan with the pairings since!

  10. They are so in-sync with each other. It’s sweet to see such a loving relationship. Diana would be very pleased IMO.

  11. What a lovely moment these Olympics are for Britain. The sun is shining and everyone looks … jolly! I’m happy for them all. Thanks for the great photos.

  12. She is super fit. Inspiring, I have to say. Any guess as to what size she wears in the J Brand jean?
So tiny — but, fit!! I’m just curious if anyone has any guesses. She definitely inspires me to exercise.
    Thanks for this great website!

    • The Duchess does look fit and healthy – but I really think that is the point. To be fit and healthy is the aim, not to where a particular size of jean because another does….. What works for one person, might not work for another, and the main thing is to be healthy and happy. Exercise certainly is great – but it should be just for you, not so that you can be the same size as another. Not trying to be critical. All of the lovely people on this great website clearly admire Catherine, which is fantastic. But it always worries me when people get overly distracted by weight, and I don’t think the Duchess would want everyone to look at what she is doing, missing ther role behind it all, and instead focusing on her physique. Hope you realise this is said in good cheer. :)

      • “wear!” a particular size jean. I’ve never made a typo like that. Too many nights watching the Olympic equestrian sports at 2am (New Zealand time!) this week! But seeing them win the bronze medal was a good reward for the lack of sleep! xxx

      • Oops! “wear” a particular size of jean! Never made a typo like that before – must be due to far too many nights watching the Olympic equestrian sport at 2am (New Zealand time!) this week. But, the bronze medal the fab NZ team won, was a great reward for the lack of sleep!

  13. I don’t get the love for those wedges. Much too high and clunky looking. Maybe they look better in person. :)

  14. I liked the dress much better when styled with the jacket. Loved her more casual look at cycling. I think she looks great in ponytails, and I wish she wore them more often. Her look was casual and sporty, but still classy.

  15. First of all, has everyone seen the picture of Will and Kate hugging at the cycling event? How great is that? So nice to see a young couple who enjoy being with each other. Secondly, what is it with that move in the first cycling picture? Was she jumping over a row of seats…..William holding her hand helping her over?

Finally, I have to say that I was somewhat critical of the blue dress the first time she wore it, but with the blazer I like it a lot more. The funny front darts aren’t visible and the high waist doesn’t look so odd. However, I still don’t like the high heels (even if they are casual) with the skinny jeans. I’d like to see her with either trainers or ballet flats.

Recycling is fine. It actually seems like someone who had to bring a limited wardrobe on vacation and chose items she could wear a lot of different ways. Of course we know she has a huge wardrobe in London as well as Angelsey but it just makes her seem more normal.

    • Get out of my head! :)

But seriously, I agree on all of your points. I love it that Kate and Will aren’t so stiff with each other in public. I remember seeing footage of Di and Charles early on in their marriage, and they just looked so frosty with each other. There wasn’t a lot – if any – hand-holding in those days. I’m glad to see the Cambridges smiling and being affectionate, and I just about died the other day when I saw a pic of them holding hands. It’s cute!

And yes, what the heck is she stepping over in that pic? I mean, does Kate really need to awkwardly step over things at this point in her life? Don’t people go to HER, not the other way around?

Yeah, I wish she’d wear flats for these sporting events. She doesn’t need to look like she’s ready to dash out on to the field, but ballet flats would really give her a nice look at the Games.

    • I loved the pic of them hugging, too!! It made me smile!

Thanks for the fantastic Olympic wardrobe coverage, WKW!!! <3

  16. Wonderful write-up, as always! And Kate is spot on, for every appearance, as always. Love her outfits!

  17. I’m not a fan of the blazer with the SM dress, but I don’t know what else she could have worn with it.

I also like the navy SW wedges much better than the original patent leather pair that was posted and I’m glad to see her in a higher, more contemporary shoe than the basic (yet classic) pump.

Thanks for all the hard work!

  18. Ahhh! She is so fabulous. Why did she have to steal my life?

  19. I really LOVE what Kate has been wearing during the games. She looks lovely and I personally think it’s entirely appropriate that she recycle so many outfits. Her choices ensure the attention is on the athletes and the Olympic games, as it should be (even though us Duchess fans are just as excited, if not more so to see her!). I ADORE the ponytail she sported at the cycling events.

    • I agree. I enjoy seeing her and all that smile, high spirit and good energy (at least what I can tell from these pictures).

      • She really looks like she’s relaxed and enjoying herself. The picture of her clapping and William hugging her is fantastic.

And they sat in the cheap seats like anyone else. They’re great!

  20. I think I should get a pair of wedges like Kate’s SW…they make her look tall and lean and even appear with longer legs. This is really cool.

  21. I always like layers of different shades of blues. However, the back open of the jacket does look a bit odd from certain angle…but I don’t dislike the entire ensemble. :)

    • I agree. I wasn’t nutty about this dress worn alone, but with a blazer, it acquires considerably more polish. However, the cut of the back of the jacket doesn’t thrill me. I haven’t seen a full-on back view, but I suspect the effect isn’t wildly flattering on anyone.

The wedges — well, I think they’re too high. Wedges are great with casual clothes, but proportion is always key with wedges and platforms. These are out of proportion owing to their height.
