May 162012

With this brief respite between appearances we though it a good time to share a few tidbits.

We begin with a reminder about the next scheduled appearance for William and Kate, it is this Friday, May 18, at the Queen’s Sovereigns’ Luncheon. The Telegraph has more on the event in a piece by writer Harry Mount.

If you happen to be in the Windsor area on Friday, it’s advisable to wear sunglasses. As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Queen is hosting a lunch for sovereign monarchs, and the assorted tiaras, gems and diamonds the size of gulls’ eggs may cause major sun glare problems…

As this is the Queen’s Jubilee year the function takes on more significance and becomes a bigger draw for other monarchs. Back to Mr. Mount’s story:

It’s the biggest gathering of monarchs – outside royal weddings and funerals – for a decade. The last time there was such a big reunion was 2002: once for the funeral of the Queen Mother and, again that year, at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee dinner for European sovereign monarchs.

Those European monarchs – who are also Knights of the Garter – get together occasionally at Garter services but, still, never in such numbers as on Friday. The crowned heads of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Spain will be among those there, joined by Emperor Akihito of Japan, though the Palace does not publish guest lists in advance. And the full cast of our own Royal family will be on hand to greet them, from the Duchess of Cambridge to Princess Alexandra.

For those who have been wondering, we do not anticipate seeing Kate in a tiara. Nor do we expect to see Kate and William at Friday’s dinner, Richard Palmer of the Express shared the following on Twitter.

Richard Palmer/Daily Express Twitter Feed (@RoyalReporter)

The dinner is officially hosted by Prince Charles, Richard says that event is a smaller, more intimate function.

We have news about special coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee from one US network, ABC.  The alphabet network will air two 2-hour specials, here are details from ABC’s news release:

ABC News will air two exclusive primetime broadcasts anchored by Katie Couric, including the only American interview with her grandson TRH The Duke of Cambridge Prince William, who pays a personal and poignant tribute to his grandmother and also speaks candidly about his mother Princess Diana and his wedding – and an interview with Prince Harry, as well as the American broadcast of the most star-studded event of all – the “Concert for the Queen”.

ABC also has exclusive rights to that huge Jubilee concert with Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones,  and many more stars. HM, Prince Philip, William & Kate, Harry and other Royal Family members are expected to be in attendance for some, or all of the concert.

Specifics on the specials and other ABC Jubilee programming:

  • Tuesday, May 29, 9-11 pm: “The Real Queen: By Her Own Royal Family with Katie Couric”
  • Tuesday, June 5, 9-11 pm: “Concert for The Queen: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration with Katie Couric”
  • Good Morning America will report live from London on Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 5.
  • World News and Nightline will also cover events surrounding the Jubilee weekend from June 2 – 5.

Kate has landed on a new crop of magazine covers following Friday’s Olympic dinner (more on that here).

Hello! Magazine

The teal Jenny Packham gown stands out on the covers, above we show the May 21 issue of Hello!, below, People magazine’s cover.

People Magazine

There are several more, a quick check at your local newsstand is likely to yield other magazine covers.

We also mentioned an early look at some of the Aquatalia by Marvin K. styles for fall, we begin with an Aquatalia classic, the ‘Regal’.

Aquatalia by Marvin. K 'Regal'

If this looks reminiscent of Kate’s oh-so-popular ‘Rouge’ (or ‘Royal,’ as it is called at Nordstrom), you are right, the style is being renamed the ‘Regal’ for the fall. The distinctive strap and buckle detailing are now showcased in an updated color palette, including a navy – wonderful news for those of us who have encountered challenges finding shoes in that hue of late.

Another new style for fall, the ‘Quiz’ knee-high boot.

Aquatalia by Marvin K. 'Quiz' boot

Previously Aquatalia offered a style by this name, however, that version was more of a bootie, this one looks like it could be another classic for the company.

Next, the ‘Pop’ bootie, looking warm and snuggly.

Aquatalia by Marvin K. 'Pop'

The ‘Quaint’ from this fall’s lineup of elegant styles.

Our final offering from Aquatalia’s Fall 2012 collection is an entirely new style for the company, say hello to the ‘Pippa’ boot.

There are quite a few bits and bytes we want to share today, beginning with word of a special fashion collaboration I think you will like.

Via Sophie Hallette

Famed French lacemaker Sophie Hallette has selected Enchanted Atelier to create a new line of bridal accessories made of the same lace design used for Kate’s gown. Many readers will recall Kate’s lace was crafted in France and then sent to London for sewing on the gown by the Royal School of Needlework. More on Sophie Hallette and the wedding dress lace:

“Everybody from the factory floor to the designers was thrilled when the news spread that our lace was on the dress,” said Romain Lescroart, CEO of Sophie Hallette. “Our laces have adorned haute couture creations and luxury goods worldwide for 127 years, but this certainly marks a crowning achievement in our history for which we draw great pride.”

A reminder of the lace as seen here on Kate’s Alexander McQueen shoes. (For our post on the dress exhibit, shoes, etc., click here.)

The Royal Collection

Now the Enchanted Atelier Collection will offer accessories in that very same Leaver’s lace pattern. (So called because the lace is made on Leavers looms more than 100 years old.) The new line will have opera length and driving length gloves, cage and traditional length veils, a bolero jacket, flowers, and sash using this very special lace. Below, just one piece from the Collection.

Duchess of Cambridge Collection by Enchanted Atelier

The collection debuts at New York Bridal Week this weekend. In a few weeks you will be able to see and purchase pieces at Enchanted Atelier and online. (Can we talk about the bolero jacket in this, how gorgeous will that be?!) We will share more photos from the shows as they become available this weekend on Facebook, Twitter and a new post.

As mentioned in the post title we have news about Kate fave Katherine Hooker, actually several pieces of news, all of them good.

  • the company is launching menswear, two men’s styles of custom jackets will be offered in a variety of materials and cuts.
  • there will be a Katherine Hooker popup shop in New York City at the end of the month, October 28th to be precise. Our thanks to WKW Facebook pal Ashley Margot, she alerted us to this item.
  • the designer has launched a ready to wear collection; as always, you can continue to order bespoke pieces, or off the rack. RTW jackets are all priced at £530, or about $825 at today’s exchange rates, coats are £595 or $925.

Additionally, visitors to the Katherine Hooker website will be treated to a new look, with improved graphics and easier navigation. And the RTW side of the business has its own online site, Katherine Hooker Now.

Katherine Hooker Now

All of the company’s styles are available, along with accessories. Perhaps more importantly, there are multiple photos of each piece, important for those not able to try on garments in person. Below, the ever-popular Alexander, a jacket Kate has been seen in on multiple occasions.

There are new items available at Katherine Hooker Now, including the Jackson coat, elegantly understated.

Returning favorites include the classic Hacking Jacket.

An update on the “E! True Hollywood Story: Kate & Pippa” show.  (I can’t help myself, here is where I have to interject a comment from my pal Vicki: “True Hollywood story: Kate and Pippa”, isn’t that an oxymoron?”)

E! True Hollywood Story

It airs tomorrow night (Wednesday, the 12th) at 10pm EDT. For those capable of operating your DVR (or with flexible schedules) our friend Ralisa shared that the show will be with repeated on Thursday the 13th from 1-2am and 3-4pm. Unfortunately E! does not air its shows online at this point, so those are your best bets if interested in the program.

Next, another magazine cover for Kate, this one from Canada’s Chatelaine, the magazine’s special Women of the Year Issue.

Chatelaine Magazine

The magazine isn’t widely sold on newsstands outside Canada, if interested in acquiring a copy our contact suggests visiting the website (French version here) or giving the magazine a call at 905-946-0084.

Good news for bride’s to be interested in creating a repli-Kate dress, as well as for those who were fond of Pippa’s MOH gown, Butterick patterns for similar frocks are now available. The pattern to re-create Kate’s wedding gown is Butterick pattern #5731.

Butterick Pattern #5731

Here is more from the actual description:

Lined dress has raised neckline, close-fitting, underlined bodice and under bodice, boned under bodice, underlay, pleated skirt with side front seams and back zipper, button/loop closing and pleated, underlined bustle.

Butterick Patterns

This pattern is currently selling at the Butterick site for just under $4 USD. There is also a Pippa dress pattern being offered by the company.

Butterick Pattern #5710

While sewing on the bias isn’t for the faint of heart, this frock also looks manageable. (To be honest, it isn’t really the sewing that creates the challenge, it is more often the fit and accompanying drape. If bias-cut dresses don’t drape properly they don’t look too fabulous.)

Butterick Patterns

Butterick pattern #5710 is also selling at just under $4 USD. Our thanks to WKW Facebook friend Stella Rothe for the tip on this!

Finally today, an update on the boots Kate has often been seen wearing, most recently here, identified by many readers as the Cookie boot, correctly so. Aquatalia tells me their closest boot to the no-longer-available Cookie is their Crystal.

Aquatalia ‘Crystal’ Boot

The boot may be purchased for $495 online in the US, it is available in black calf leather in every size as of this writing.

Mar 112011

The young couple was busy that last Friday of February, their second official appearance together was at the University where they first met, Saint Andrews in Scotland.

Miss Middleton and Prince William were on hand to help kick off the University’s 600th Anniversary celebration. Here is how each looked back in 2005 when they graduated.

PA Wire

The couple also helped publicize a fundraising campaign for the University. Miss Middleton looked lovely in a bright red suit, black Aquatalia boots, and black gloves.

It turns out the suit was by Italian clothier Spagnoli.

Luisa Spagnoli

The Daily Mail broke the news of “the Italian job”.  (Ahem.)

“…Kate purchased the striking £160 skirt and £335 sushi jacket from Hollie de Keyser in Knightsbridge, Central London.

In doing so, she was retracing the fashion footsteps of Princess Diana, de Keyser’s premises were frequented by William’s late mother when the boutique was known as Emma Somerset.”

The designer told People magazine how she felt about Miss Middleton’s style choice:

“She looked stunning, and we are proud and flattered that a style icon for women of all the world like her has worn Luisa Spagnoli,” managing director Nicoletta Spagnoli tells PEOPLE. “The color red is perfect for her brunette hair and pale skin.”

The company offers a broad range of styles, below we show looks from the Spring 2011 collection.

Luisa Spagnoli

More looks from that group.

Luisa Spagnoli

Spagnoli also creates formal styles.

Luisa Spagnoli

The line has proven so popular Hollie de Keyser plans to open a Spagnoli shop just down the street from her own boutique.

We wouldn’t be surprised if soon Prince William is known as “the man who accompanied Kate Middleton to ______” (just fill in the blank), as opposed to “The Future King of England”.
