Kate was in Jenny Packham for tonight’s black tie function at the National Portrait Gallery, the annual Portrait Gala.

Royal photographer Mark Stewart predicted it would be a glittering evening and he was correct. The Daily Mirror’s Victoria Murphy shared this photo of the the stairs heading into the gala event, it set the tone for the night.

The Duchess wore the inky blue Jenny Packham gown first seen at October’s 100 Women in Hedge Funds dinner. It was Kate’s jewelry that created the most chatter however. More specifically, the shining, shimmering diamond necklace loaned to her by the Queen.

Kate and William had multiple engagements today, beginning with a stop at South Africa House to sign the Nelson Mandela book of condolence.

If the Duchess’s suit looked familiar that is because she has worn it on previous occasions. Below left we see Kate wearing it at a 2007 art opening in Dublin, on the right she wears it for Order of the Garter ceremonies in June of 2008. (I’ve no idea of the suit designer and/or retailer but will be looking for that information tomorrow.)

The suit consists of a fitted jacket and pencil skirt in matching material.

The jacket features flap pockets and decorative buttons; there is also piping on the lapels and pockets. It looks like the sleeves have self-cuffs; they can be turned back without exposing any lining or hem because they have an inch or two of the same material on the inside.

At the 2007 gallery exhibit Kate accessorized with a necklace we can’t quite see, chandelier style earrings (I think), open-toed heels with a decorative element at the toe, a black clutch and two rings.

When at Order of the Garter in 2008 Kate accessorized with that mysterious black suede clutch (perhaps our most-discussed UFO), a Philip Somerville hat (that was later auctioned) and what looks like a pearl bracelet.

Today Kate paired the suit with her Annoushka pearl drop earrings, it does not look like she carried a purse.

For this evening’s engagement at the Natural History Museum we saw a return of the black lace ‘Amoret’ gown by Temperley London.

The occasion was a screening of “David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive,” a 3D film debuting on Sky-TV New Year’s Day. The movie shows some of the renowned Museum’s exhibits “coming to life” using 3D technology and computer generated images.

Some may recall that Kate became Patron of the Museum in April 2012. She was expected to meet Sir David at a Museum event last November, but he was ill and unable to attend. Kate took to the podium in his place (seen below), greeting guests, sponsors and others attending the opening of the Museum’s Treasures permanent exhibit.

For those perhaps not as familiar with this garment, a bit of background. Kate first was seen in the frock at the War Horse film premiere in January of 2012.

The dress features a floral motif of French lace atop a nude silk lining. There is also bow detailing at the waist, a keyhole back and deep v-neck on the front.

Kate also wore the dress for a Saint Andrews University dinner in November of last year.

This evening the Duchess again wore a necklace we have been asked about several times.

It was first noted when Kate visited the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice last week. We show it below as worn this morning at South Africa House (L), and at the Hospice (R).

It turns out the necklace is by a notable jewelry firm, Mappin and Webb. It was first noted by Jenny on Facebook, then Anna of My Small Obsessions got in touch with Mappin & Webb who confirmed it is their piece. Below we show a slightly different version, just to provide a sense of the piece.

Kate’s necklace is white gold and diamonds, part of the firm’s Fortune Collection; that line features a variety of items in white, rose and yellow gold. Below, the Fortune Duo earrings and pendant in white gold and diamonds.

Mappin & Webb is a well established fixture on London’s retail scene, dating back to the 1770s. They have served five monarchs over a continuous period for the last 115 years, and also hold Royal Warrants as Silversmiths to both HM and Prince Charles.

There is one more accessory the Duchess sported tonight.

For everyone going through KWS (Kate Withdrawal Syndrome), we have a few tidbits that may be of interest, especially the first item. It involves the necklace Kate is wearing below.

Reuters via International Business Times

The pave diamond pendant necklace Kate has worn with some frequency is probably the one item we have been asked about the most of late. With gratitude to a lovely reader who wishes to remain anonymous it seems we have an answer to the mystery. It is the Asprey Button Pendant, we show it below in yellow gold with whats appears to be an amethyst center stone.

The amazing Ayvee of Diana’s Jewels initially figured out that the letters on the side of the pendant spelled “Bond,” and our gracious tipster pointed out that some of Asprey’s pieces are given nicknames with the word “Bond” in them, that is where their main store is located.  After hearing from our anonymous friend I did a little looking online and found something I thought might be the same and sent it off to Ayvee to hear what she thought, and she concurs “it is by Asprey London.”  (Although it is no longer available, at least not that we are aware of, although Asprey does offer a bespoke service and would probably be happy to create another of these if requested.)

Ayvee did some scouting and shared an eBay auction for the necklace shown above, the Buy it Now price is $1899.95 USD.

Both items are being sold by Luxury Bazaar, a firm with which I am not familiar.  Ayvee shared another link to these matching earrings, also from Luxury Bazaar, but in 18K white gold.

The ‘special price’ for these is shown as $2030 USD.

One other jewelry note, the mainstream media has picked up on a story we initially reported back in June, this one involves Kate’s sapphire and diamond earrings.

The photo above is from our post June 12, when Kate wore them to the church service marking the Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday, in that post we speculated that they seemed ‘almost to match Kate’s engagement ring.”  In our June 27th post about Kate attending Wimbledon we wrote:

“She also wore the fairly new earrings created from Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond earrings.”

We also want to thank the helpful Carissa at G-Free Runner, she tweeted us about this post on her blog that examined the issue as well.

Well, this Sunday The Mirror carried a story, “Kate Middleton given Diana’s favourite earrings by Prince William“. Below is the entire story.

“PRINCE William has given a pair of his mother Princess Diana’s earrings to new wife Kate.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore the diamond and sapphire gems during the couple’s official visit to Canada and the US.

Kate, 29, had Diana’s heavy studs “which match her cluster engagement ring“ remodelled into drop earrings. Kate wore them for the first time when she and Wills watched Andy Murray from the Royal Box at Wimbledon last month.

A courtier said: ‘Now they’re married William wanted her to have some of his mother’s favourite pieces.’

The Mirror’s story has been picked up by thousands of media outlets, many of you have probably seen some of the reports. These photos illustrated the story.

To see much better photos, once again we recommend Ayvee’s section on Kate’s jewelry, part of her Diana’s Jewelry site.

We are happy to have the mystery necklace taken care of, with special thanks to our tipster and Ayvee!
