The Princess Debuts New Styles at Six Nations Rugby Match

The Princess of Wales debuted a new coat and earrings for today’s rugby match between Wales and England, although both items will look familiar to many readers.

The match is part of the Six Nations Championship.

Many readers will recall that the Princess is patron of England’s Rugby Football Union, a position she has held since 2022. Prince William has served as patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016.

Before this afternoon’s match, the Prince and Princess met with injured players supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.

William is patron of the trust, which was set up to help players who have been severely injured while playing rugby in Wales, and their loved ones, inviting them to every Wales home game and hosting an annual family day.

The trust was established in 1972 to support athletes seriously injured while playing rugby football in Wales. We learn more about today’s conversation with injured players from this Daily Telegraph story by Hannah Furness. 

Ahead of the match, the Prince and Princess spoke of how they watch Princes George and Louis play rugby at weekends in “freezing” weather. “At weekends we go from one competition to the next,” Prince William said. 

The Princess added: “Louis is six and he’s just started touch rugby and George is 11 and he plays a bit more. They do really enjoy it, actually.”

She added: “They’ve been exposed to lots of different sports.”

In this photo, you see the couple with Leif Thobroe, an officer with Disability Sport Wales. Mr. Thobrow lost the use of his right arm in a spinal cord injury sustained in a 2015 rugby match.

A Kensington Palace news release notes all injured players are also invited to a  ‘Family Day’ where they can enjoy time together with their families.

Today, England prevailed in the match, winning by a score of 68 to 14.

Robert Jobson reports the royals “visited both the Wales and England changing rooms. The Wales team invited the Princess to join the Prince in meeting them.”

The royals also met with a representative of Notpla at the stadium today. The company is an Earthshot Prize winner for its packaging items created from seaweed.

Apart from the rugby, Saturday’s match holds additional interest for the Prince because of its takeaway food packaging.

The Principality Stadium is now one of the sports arenas signed up to swap single-use plastics for Notpla seaweed packaging.

Notpla was one of the 2022 winners of the Earthshot Prize, which the Prince launched with the Royal Foundation in 2021. The company now works in partnership with caterers Levy UK & Ireland to replace more than 750,000 single-use plastic food containers with ones made of biodegradable seaweed.

I believe the gentleman in the photos is Notpla co-founder and co-CEO Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez.

Now for our look at what Kate wore to the rugby match. 

It seems likely this is a past-season bespoke coat by Alexander McQueen. You can see the similarities between this coat and other Alexander McQueen dress coats worn by the Princess, especially the red and green styles displayed below. Design elements distinguishing today’s garment from those shown in green and red: a set-in waistband and pleated chest pockets.

The chest pockets on today’s coat are almost identical to the style seen on this McQueen blazer, minus the button. 

The Princess carried her Grace Han ‘Love Letter’ Top-Handle handbag ($3071), made of calfskin with a detachable shoulder strap, distinctive flap, and goldtone metal hardware.

And she wore her Gianvito Rossi bespoke suede boots similar to the brand’s Piper Suede Block Heel style ($1995).

She had on a new (but familiar) pair of earrings, the Shyla ‘Rosalia’ style (£70, roughly $90 at today’s exchange rates) in Lapis. The earrings are made of 22-carat gold on sterling silver, set with eight lapis stones. 

We also saw the Princess’s eternity band, as well as an England-Wales friendship pin similar to the style shown above. Thank you to Lauren for pointing out the pin. 

The Princess wore the same earrings in the freshwater pearl style when visiting textile mills in September 2023.
