Hello, and Merry Christmas to all those celebrating the day! The Princess of Wales chose familiar pieces for today’s walk to and from church at Sandringham.
The post also covers a video released yesterday with the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte performing a piano duet.
First, Christmas Day, and a full complement of Royal Family members attending services at St. Mary Magdalene Church on the grounds of the Sandringham estate. Below, the King, Queen, the Princess Royal (behind the Queen) with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Zara Tindall.
More about the church from its website.
St Mary Magdalene, the parish church of Sandringham, is used regularly as a place of worship by The Royal Family when in residence – most notably at Christmas time.
The beautiful medieval church is free to visit when the House and Gardens are open, and has held many celebrations, such as Princess Charlotte’s christening, as well as memorials to members and relations of The Royal Family from Queen Victoria onwards.

Here you can see Zara Tindall, Prince William, Prince Louis, along with Lena and Mia Tindall.
In this image, you can see Sir Tim, Lady Louise, and her brother, the Earl of Wessex.
I thought this was a lovely photo of Princess Charlotte after church.
After the service, the royals spent time greeting well-wishers gathered near St. Mary Magdalene.
You can see the Princess chatting with someone here, the rest of the family off to the left, and other royal family members in the background.

Another view of the Princess of Wales.
Some of those gathered near the church arrived last night to get a good viewing spot. The Daily Mail reports there were more than 500 people gathered near the church to see the royals.
Wheelchair-bound Maureen Pitt, 90, travelled to see the Royals from Wolverhampton, West Midlands, with her daughter Vanessa Pitt, who acts as her carer.
The widow came with four selection boxes for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as well as Zara and Mike Tindall’s daughter Mia, but said: ‘I told William not to let them have them until later because they’ve probably had enough chocolate already this morning.
‘He was lovely, just so ordinary – he’s just like his mother. He asked me my name and I gave him the chocolate.
‘Kate and the children were lovely too.’

In this video from Hello magazine, you see Prince Louis and Prince George with their father.

And her daughter, with a bouquet of flowers she was given.
Now, for our look at what Kate wore this Christmas Day, beginning with her BLAZÉ Milano ‘Lahloo Anyway’ Coat.
Featuring a large windowpane check in shades of brown and burgundy, the coat showcases a double-breasted silhouette with a nipped-in waist, peaked lapels, strong shoulders, and the brand’s ‘smiley pockets.’ Here you see it in the jacket style.
It was first noted on Christmas Day 2021 (shown below), when we had just a glimpse of it.
The coat was seen again in mid-January when the Princess visited Royal Marsden Hospital, then again at a February engagement, and then again today.
From what we could see, it looks like the Princess wore her Gucci Pleated Checked Wool-Twill Midi Skirt in burgundy beneath the coat.
The Princess wore a hat by Juliette Botterill we’d not seen before: the milliner’s Felt Lace Percher Hat (£650, about $880 at today’s exchange rates), in chocolate-brown peachbloom felt with intricate cutouts. The description notes it is “worn on a slim headband with hat elastic, available in your choice of hair colour to ensure a secure and comfortable fit.” Thank you to Kate Middleton Styled on Instagram for the hat ID.
She carried her Hudson Bag ($525) by DeMellier London, first noted at a November engagement.
The Princess brought back her Gianvito Rossi custom boots in brown suede, similar to the brand’s Glen style, although the Glen has a more rounded toe than the boots worn by the Princess.
She also repeated her Silk Scarf in Autumn Partridge (no longer available) by Really Wild Clothing.
A fitting choice, as we first saw the scarf on Christmas Day 2014.
She wore her brown Imogen gloves by Cornelia James.
And her Cartier Trinity Earrings in 18-carat yellow, rose, and white gold.
Princess Charlotte’s coat is a Catherine Walker design. Her shoes are by Tory Burch, the Cap Toe Croc-Effect Suede Ballet Flats ($300 at Zappos), with thanks again to Kate Middleton Styled for the shoe ID.

We now move to the video released yesterday showing the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte performing a piano duet.
The video was recorded earlier this month at Windsor Castle’s Inner Hall and was used to open the ‘Together at Christmas‘ carol concert shown last night and again today on ITV. The duo performed Scottish composer Erland Cooper’s “Holm Sound.”
We learn more about the composition from India McTaggart’s story in The Telegraph.
Cooper, an award-winning composer and producer from the Orkney Islands, joined the duo earlier in December at the Princess’s request, to film the segment. He composed the classical piece at the height of the Covid pandemic, taking inspiration from the wild environment of the Orkneys.
He shares a love of the natural world with the Princess of Wales, who initially wrote to Cooper to express her appreciation for his music and to thank him for his dedication to promoting nature through his art.
And here is the video.
Love and connection through music 💕

Another photo of the mother-daughter duo from the taping.
We return to The Telegraph’s piece.
Cooper, 43, said: “We had a very warm, creative conversation earlier in the year, which was lovely, and then it culminated with an invitation to Windsor Castle. The Princess asked: ‘Would it be OK if we perform this piece of music that we so enjoy together?’
“It was such a lovely request so I said absolutely, no problem at all. I was invited to witness this incredible bond between mother and daughter performing together and for that I am so grateful.
“And there’s a wonderful bit of serendipity as the piece was composed and dedicated to my mum, also called Charlotte. They didn’t know that.”
In the video, the Princess wears a dark green velvet maxi dress or gown. You can see her ‘Fern Drop Earrings‘ by Catherine Zoraida and Halcyon Days Maya Torque Bangle in the Diamond colorway, first noted at Wimbledon this summer.
Charlotte Princess is wearing the ‘Diana’ Merino Wool Jumper in navy from La Coqueta Kids and what looks like Boden’s Fully Lined Button Kilt, with thanks to Kate Middleton Styled for those IDs.

One more Christmas-time update to share involves Prince George following in his father’s footsteps by visiting The Passage charity, just as his father did back in 1993.
Here is the guest book with the royal visitors’ names.
And here is a brief video commemorating the visit.
Proud to join volunteers and staff at The Passage in preparing Christmas lunch – this year with another pair of helping hands!

I'm delighted to see Catherine out and looking so well on the Sandringham walk. I love the colours in her windowpane check Blaze Milano Lahloo Anyway coat as they suit her so well and make for a relatively colourful winter piece. I continue to deplore the elasticated gather on the back of the coat which looks so amateurish on such a lovely garment, but clearly it must be comfortable.
I find the pattern scarf too busy tucked into all that check fabric and while I'm grateful we have at least got a new hat to upgrade this coat outing, I find all those angles too sharp against the softness of the coat and most unlike the femininity of lace. The matching bag, boots and gloves are great for looking truly ladylike, as are those gorgeous and well-used Cartier earrings.
I was especially pleased to see Charlotte's sweet coat as it is much like one I myself used to have at a similar age, back in another century. I thought myself very smart in my contrast cuffs and collar, and loved the swing of the skirt at the back, despite not being up to couturier quality at the time. Clearly a classic pattern.

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate, and wishing peace and all good things in the New Year to everyone who frequents this delightful page!
Upon first glance last week, I was a little gloomy about the brown overtones of the Princess' coat, even though I know that chocolate colours are very much on trend right now. It was serving "blah." But on further consideration, I think I am enjoying this coat. The checked pattern with the burgundy thread is very seasonal and festive. I adore the distinctive pockets, which are so creative and cool. The boots are buttery and gorgeous, as always. I always like when the Princess wears big furry hats or dashing brimmed chapeaux on Christmas, instead of this more fascinator-y style, but this is a very small quibble. The children look adorable, as always. The Princess looks marvelous.
Such fun, as always, and thanking Susan as we go in to 2026!

@zell I don’t think there’s anything unacceptable in the U.K. about wearing bright colours, but I also think it’s true that it’s fairly unusual for adult women with any pretensions to style to do so - in the winter season at least. The vast majority of professional and well off women you see in the street will be in navy, camel, grey, the ever present black - and this year brown and tweed.
The Royals are a law unto themselves (good for them) and are not really fashion leaders in the U.K. unlike, for example, Queen Letizia of Spain who has a very strong style.
Personally (as a light spring) I’d love to see a wider range of colours in winter coats in particular. I do wish the POW would try a cream or white coat. She looks devine in the right shades of cream/ white.

@CAWI,
Excellent points, CAWI!
I will just sum up my take in this way: Everyone wore Beautiful outfits, but my particular favorites are the ones that Queen Camilla and Anne, Princess Royal wore. Their Marvelous red coats, for Christmas, are so beautiful. The vivid red of their coats and the Queen's hat, really cheered me up to see! Whatever the reason, I found it a delight to see them in such glowing, seasonal colors!
I also have great admiration for the Royals, and especially for Queen Camilla, for the excellent work she does concerning many important issues that don't always get the attention they deserve.
Thank you for all the wealth of information you have shared with me do generously, CAWI! And Happy New Year!

@Zell, thanks for responding. I agree with what you say.
There are huge cultural differences at play I think which muddy the waters. That’s why - without straying into political topics - incomers from outside the U.K. to the Royal Family can have a difficult time.
It’s not just a family but a ‘firm’ - a business. It’s highly hierarchical historically and, as a matter of tradition and survival, all defer to the rank above in every way. It’s the very opposite of a democratic meritocracy. If you want to do what you like and be your own person in public then I don’t think that would work or be regarded as acceptable.
The POW seems to be a skilled diplomat as well as a pleasant sensible person and appears to have navigated these waters successfully. It’s not for everyone.

I've been away and just read this post today. First, thanks to Susan for all the excellent work she has done to keep us informed and happy! Catherine's outfit is not one of my favorites, but I do like the fact that she rewears many of her clothes. On the other hand, I adore Charlotte's outfit! And it reminds me of a coat that Diana wore (that I always liked) in the first few years of her marriage. Anyone remember that coat? And for everyone--very best wishes for a lovely New Year.

@Caroline A., yes, that's the one! I had forgotten some of the details (like the leather collar rather than velveteen) but I remembered the cream/brown combo. Thanks for your great detective work!

@Caroline A.,
Caroline A. great coat "detective" work!
I also have a suggestion for Rooney K, but this is a later Diana look, and the coat only is a (kinda) match to Charlotte's in terms of the colors - but it was also designed by Arabella Pollan:

I note all the comments about brown. It’s not my favourite. However, it’s very ‘on trend’ this year and I think the POW looks beautiful.
It’s maybe worth pointing out that UK fashion is generally more subdued in terms of colour at least than in the US - certainly than the warmer parts of the US ( leaving aside the late petite Queen who liked to be vivid in colour so she could be seen).!
I suspect too that at big royal family occasions there is some tact and diplomacy at work in standing back and allowing the more senior ladies to have the spotlight.

@Caroline A.,
I agree with you, but, CAWI is not the only one to suggest that this was a deliberate choice, a coordinated sartorial plan, for the others to Not wear red.
Catherine is so very toned down in her sedate brown, from head to toe, while Camilla and Anne are in the most attention grabbing color of all, red - and such a very bright red.
I think it would have looked more cohesive to have some other ladies in red, as well.
To have only the two most senior ladies in red reads as visual dominance. It isolates them, as well, from the others, on visual terms.
At the same time, at least they wore red, the most Festive color of all, for Christmas. So, I'm not complaining. It's very nice to see!

@Zell, I don’t read anything into the fact that Queen Camilla and The Princess Royal wore red, other than that they both felt like wearing a bright, festive colour. I very much doubt that either of them suffers from insecurity regarding their positions.

@CAWI,
As you your last point, it makes the senior Royal ladies, such as Queen Camilla & Anne, Princess Royal, come across as rather insecure, that they are to be the only ones in a bright color. Just my take, others may see it as a beautiful kind of natural deference, but, to me, it's insecure, and also, since they both wore red, that also shows it's quite acceptable in England to wear it, particularly at Christmas.
You still make excellent points. I just think that a Queen or Princess Royal, would be above such things. Maybe I am very naive though.
And I agree that Catherine looks beautiful in that toned down color. I still maintain though that she could have worn a jewel toned scarf to brighten up her look.
