Catch-up Post on The Duchess’s Engagements & Outfits

I am back with a post covering the Duchess’s last several engagements. We’ll begin with last Thursday’s visit by the Cambridges to the Newham Ambulance Station in East London.

The station is the second busiest in the London Ambulance network, handling more than 75000 calls in the past year.  The couple was there to hear from staff how they have been coping during the pandemic. From The Newham Recorder’s story:

The Royal couple also heard more about the mental health and wellbeing support provided to staff at the station, including drop-in sessions and wellbeing spaces alongside wider London Ambulance Service (LAS) initiatives.

LAS deputy chief executive Khadir Meer, who welcomed the couple, said: “Our service has had to work harder than ever over the past year to care for London.

“It’s vital and extremely rewarding work, but it can take a toll and even the most resilient of us need support at times like these.

More from The Telegraph’s story by Victoria Ward.

Over the last year, the Cambridges and The Royal Foundation have worked to support those working on the frontline of the pandemic, including through the provision of grants to ten leading charities at the heart of mental health and frontline support as part of a bespoke COVID relief fund.

While they were there, they ended up FaceTiming a paramedic’s family.

We return to The Telegraph piece.

As they chatted to paramedic Jay Khan, she asked if it was okay to call her father, Abu, in Banglasdesh as he had been  separated from his family since the beginning of lockdown when his mother became sick.

She had soon whipped out her phone and the royals found themselves having a chat with Abu 5,000 miles away.

The Duke, 38, told him: “You must be very proud of your daughter. She’s looking forward to seeing you soon.”

Abu replied:  “Yes we are all very proud of her.”

Buoyed by her success, Miss Khan then called her sister Nasrin and granddad Baharam in the UK, putting them on to the Cambridges.

The Duke told them: “She works very hard and she’s looking forward to seeing you soon.”

Some of the funding from NHS Charities is being used to continue operating London Ambulance’s fleet of Wellbeing Tea Trucks, which provide hot drinks, and snacks, offering a chance for a break to staff and volunteers.  More from the London Ambulance Service site:

The Royal couple also saw one of eight of the Service’s so-called ‘Tea Trucks’ that have played an important role delivering hot drinks and snacks to crews at control rooms and hospital bays while London’s cafes and hospital canteens remain closed in lockdown.

The Duke and Duchess are Patrons of NHS Charities Together which has donated £100,000 for supplies on the trucks. This ‘Tea Truck’ was named “Sir Tom” in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore for his incredible fundraising for NHS Charities Together.

The couple visited the wellbeing garden.

The area was created by staff so they would have a quiet space after their shifts.

We learn more about the artwork in the garden from Robert Jobson’s Evening Standard story:

During the visit, the couple were pictured standing in front of a “Healing Hurt” heart mural – complete with a crown.

The street art – in the station’s wellbeing garden – featured a red heart mended with two plasters, beneath a golden crown, and above the words in capitals “Healing Hurt”.

The colourful murals were by street art group Art Under The Hood.

Another view of the Duchess.

Now for our look at what Kate wore to Thursday’s engagement.

Many will recognize her Massimo Dutti coat, seen below when it was first worn in January 2020.

The Limited Edition Cashmere Wool Camel Coat is made of a 95% wool/5% cashmere blend.  It features double-breasted styling, front flap pockets, peak lapels, and a deep back vent for ease of movement.

Beneath the coat, it looked like Kate was wearing the Sophie Knitted Rollneck Top ($180) by Reiss, crafted of a blend of nylon, wool, and alpaca.

The turtleneck is available in several other colors. Many thanks to Gabi and Lady Coventry / Middleton Maven for the ID on this piece.

The Duchess wore a new (to us, anyway!) pair of suede pumps for the engagement.

There are suggestions on social media the style is by Jimmy Choo, and others think it is by Gianvito Rossi.  Until there are better photos of the heels, I’m reluctant to identify them.

Kate brought back a bag by Métier London that we first saw in December during the mini royal train tour.  It is the brand’s ‘Mini Roma’ style ($1170), and measures 4.3″ x 8.2″, and comes with a metal chain handle as well as an adjustable leather strap.

The Duchess repeated an Amaia Kids style face mask, the ‘yellow pepper’ design‘ first worn in October 2020 for the ‘Hold Still’ exhibition community launch.

We also saw the return of the Citrine Drop earrings (£458, roughly $640 at today’s exchange rates) from jeweler Kiki McDonough.

Here is a 4:30 video of the visit.

For a video released by the Irish Foreign Ministry on St. Patrick’s Day, the Duchess sported a bright green blazer.  The Duke and Duchess are the second speakers, hitting about 11-seconds into the piece.

The couple shared “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” greetings in the video, and Kate wore a Zara Textured Blazer (£59.99) jacket in ‘apple green’ for the taping.

The garment is made of an acrylic/polyester/viscose blend and features double-breasted styling, shiny gold buttons, flap pockets, and notched lapels. This offers a closer look at the details and fabric.

She also wore her Daniella Draper Mini Cupid Hoops with Baby Shamrock Charms and Gold Baby Shamrock Necklace ($390), pieces we first saw during the couple’s visit to Ireland last March.

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We now move to a March 11 school engagement by the Cambridges.

The duo visited School 21 in Stratford, East London.

From The Mirror’s coverage:

Children at School21, a state-funded school for pupils aged 4-18, will be given access to lessons on issues such as anxiety and depression from Mentally Healthy Schools.

The lessons are on a website financed from an initial £800,000 grant from the then Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry and launched by Kate at Roe Green Junior School in Kingsbury, north west London, in January 2018.

The future Queen has championed the idea of early intervention by experts to help children struggling with mental health problems.

Kensington Palace posted a quick video.

But returning to school won’t be easy for everyone, and for many, the last year will have taken its toll. No one should feel alone and that’s why from today all schools across the UK can get free expert information about mental health, courtesy of #MentallyHealthySchools. pic.twitter.com/TVTxIrS2Fb

— The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (@KensingtonRoyal) March 11, 2021

The Duke and Duchess took part in play sessions.

It was a brisk, windy day.

Back to The Mirror’s story:

Kate, in a pink Max & Co coat, knelt down to talk to children in a pop-up cafe, while William helped a little girl building  a wall in the playground’ construction area.

He joked he he had been taking orders from the construction manager. “I was just doing what I was told,” he said to laughter from teachers.

Later he sat on a raised floor talking to a little boy who was brandishing a clipboard,  as Kate went to a water play area and then joined children in a sand pit hunting for treasure.

The Duchess helped children look for buried treasure in a sandpit.

It looks like Kate made new friends.

The Duke and Duchess then spent time with teachers and staff to talk about the Mentally Healthy Schools project’s goals.

Now for our look at what Kate wore to visit the school.

She wore the Runaway Belted Coat by Max&Co., a division of Max Mara.  It is 100% wool, with oversized notched lapels, patch pockets, an open front, slits at sleeve hem, and a self-belt. It is a signature piece for Max&Co., available in an array of colors. There were several pink shades offered, as you can see in the photos below.

Harrod’s has the coat in stock ($606) in a slightly lighter shade of pink.

Beneath the coat, a new Boden sweater, the brand’s Hambleden Scallop design ($90) in a color called Azalea Pink.

The jumper is a blend of 70% cotton/30% wool, with the scalloped stitching at the neckline and cuff, with a ribbed hem.

It looks like this color is sold out, but the piece is offered in several other colors.

Kate brought back her Jigsaw High-Waisted Sport Luxe Trousers.

Along with her Jaeger ‘Kate’ bag (£150, no longer available) in navy leather.

One related note: Marks and Spencer now own Jaeger.  After Jaeger went into administration (somewhat similar to filing bankruptcy in the US), the department store acquired the brand and plans to start offering merchandise this spring.

Kate brought back her Emmy ‘Josie’ pumps ($430).

The Duchess wore her hair in a ponytail.

She had on an Amaia Kids Pink Pepper mask (£15).

And the recently-identified Chain Huggie Hoop earrings ($22) by UK-based Orelia.

Many thanks to Couture Royals for solving this mystery with her earring ID!

Apologies to those I missed on other IDs, I wasn’t able to entirely catch up with who discovered which pieces.

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Our final look is from a call made to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.

The Duchess spoke with 21-year-old Jasmine Harrison to congratulate her on becoming the youngest woman to solo-row the Atlantic.

The trip of nearly 5000 kilometers took 70 days to complete. In its story, Hello reports, “Jasmine set out from the Canary Islands in December, and arrived in Antigua last week. Her epic journey raised funds for ShelterBox, an international charity that distributes green boxes containing lifesaving supplies to disaster victims, and the Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), which is focused on restoring ocean health.”

The Duchess wore a blouse by Boden.

It was the British retailer’s Dora Tie-Neck Blouse ($110).

The piece is 100% viscose, described as lightweight in a semi-fitted silhouette.  The blouse buttons up the front and has the attached tie, as well as full sleeves with buttoned cuffs.

Kate brought back her Rhodochrosite Mini Pyramid Charm Hoop earrings ($110) by Missoma, shown below as worn for a previous engagement.

 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Please know how much I appreciate the lovely comments and messages on the loss of my mother.  I feel so very fortunate to be supported by such a wonderful community.  Thank you a thousand times for your kindness and wisdom.

    Dear Susan –

I wish I had the words to comfort you. You’d think that in years of medical training and helping many patients and families through times like these I would have learned them. I haven’t, I think, because death is always hard. Each person and each relationship is unique.

WKW has been there for me as a source of respite and comfort over the past decade as I completed my own medical training. Thank you for those moments you have given me, many of them in the early morning hours and late nights of hospital halls. I hope you find many of your own moments of peace in the hours, days, weeks, months, and years to come.

Losing a mother is never easy and I’m so sorry for your loss, Susan.

Awhile ago I mentioned on Facebook that when I lost my mom three years ago, one of the only things for months that could put a smile on my face was reading WKW. I hope that writing it will give you a peaceful feeling in the months to come.

At my mom’s graveside, the minister read the poem “She is Gone,” which was read at the Queen Mother’s funeral. I recommend the poem to you. (I would post it here but I’m not sure of copyright restrictions.)

When I saw you did not post I thought it must have been something serious. Now I’m reading that you lost your mother. I’m so sorry about this. Loosing a parent is hard as it feels like you lost a piece of yourself. I hope you made nice memories with your mum and that when in due time, the pain of your loss is softened out and those memories and the love you had for your mom will remain to cherish. Being with you in thoughts.

Susan, so sorry to hear of your mother’s death. I hope you and all her loved ones will take comfort in your memories.

In one of those abrupt turns, not a fan of camel as a color (washes me right out!), but like this monochromatic look on the Duchess. I love the pink coat – such a bright note!

    Dear Susan,

From all of us in the beautiful WKW community you built (over a decade in the making :), please accept our most heartfelt condolences on the loss of your mother. I am so sorry for your loss. It is not made easier by this international period of intense grief during the pandemic. My hope is that with time, you can begin to remember your mom through all of the small touches, little memories, and mannerisms that were distinctly hers. I hope that her presence will live through your cultivation of her memory. We send you and your family our love and support! And virtual daffodils. <3 <3 <3

I am so very sorry for your loss, dear Susan. Hope you take comfort in that you must make her so proud, creating one of the only safe spaces on the internet that are truly free from vulgar and demeaning speech and focus on the charities and meaning and of course, the fashion. A fun and creative and wonderful space that so many of us go to on a daily basis to relax and enjoy in a wholesome way. So so sorry, wishing you much strength and comfort.

Thank you for taking the time to write this post and share Kate’s fashion with us – it is something that has helped many of us escape during this difficult year, and words cannot describe the appreciation I have for you continuing to bring us that joy even when you are forced to deal with your own losses. I hope you were able to enjoy the time you had with your mother.

Regarding Kate’s fashion, I like the monochrome look with the Massimo Dutti coat and Reiss sweater (I am coming to terms with the fact that all coats will continue to be longer than what I deem to be fashionable, and it’s time for me to find things to like in some of them). I am not a big fan of any of the pink looks – the coat is too bubblegum-esque and while Boden has had some absolutely dreamy tie-neck blouses available in the past few months, this is not one of my favourites. The Jaeger trousers look far too big when being blown around in the wind, though I must admit pairing the pink with the navy was a smart choice. The green coat for St. Patrick’s Day is a bit too jarring for my taste too. Luckily the video was a pleasure to watch!

Delighted to see you back and please accept continuing sympathies and support for the journey ahead.

It’s very satisfying to restart with such a healthy batch of outfits. Kate has been keeping up her fashion game during lockdown, my favourites being the bright spots of colour she gave us via her super pink Max&Co coat and the sharp green Zara jacket. My one regret was the Jigsaw wide leg trousers which I find inelegant under a knee-length coat, plus trouser hems so long they seemed to trail on the ground. I loved the navy accessories against the pink.

Where the Zara blazer was concerned, I’m only sorry we didn’t get to see the whole of it. It was a very spring-like shade of green to wear for St Patrick’s, and I loved its funky tweed vibe and bright gold buttons. I just hope it’s a good length on Kate. The Shamrock jewellery was a very welcome repeat.

The pink Boden tie-bow blouse was very sweet, I’m no fan of these bows, but this one sits nicely and behaves itself, there must be a good drape in the fabric, plus the bow isn’t oversized. It’s fun that it’s been styled to wear with jeans and I loved the pink Missoma drops with it. Lovely to see Kate’s hair away from her face with all three looks.

I was less impressed with the all-taupe Massimo Dutti coat oufit. I think it looks best with black accessories, including boots, but I appreciate that the Duchess wants to switch up her outfits. I didn’t think the taupe was so good next to Kate’s face, I think it drains colour from her, and the Reiss turtle neck sits strangely. The turnover only comes halfway down Kate’s throat which I always feel looks a bit cheap, I like my turtles to turn fully over to the line of the seam. Shoes and bag were a safe choice and I was pleased to see another old favourite from Kate’s earrings in the McDonough Citrine Drops.

My deepest sympathies, Susan, on the loss of your dear mother. I know how hard this is, and I am just so very sorry.
I think every outfit Catherine wore is appropriate for each occasion, particularly the pink. I love that camel coat but liked it better paired with black.
I know I am jumping ahead of a post here, but that cream coat she wore today at the Abbey is so beautiful, especially in that setting. I am awe-struck that they are vaccinating 2,000 folks a week in Poet’s Corner. I am very jealous. I went to Walgreen’s. ; )

Susan, your professionalism in doing a round-up post at a time of loss I think speaks volumes about you and by extension, the upbringing your mother gave you. And even more so, your always explaining the cause and telling us about the other people rather than just focusing on the fashion. I know for me, and believe that for many others here, your professionalism and varied focus and caring is why we are here and not at the other blogs dedicated to Catherine. May your mother rest in peace, and may your happy memories give you peace in the days, weeks, months and years ahead too.

In terms of the clothes. I love camel, but that outfit was a bit too much brown on brown on brown. The pink was a fun surprise. I’ve not traditionally been a pink fan, but am coming around to it! The green felt a little too granny smith apple in its bright colour, and the pussy bows are always awful. Loving the Boden sweater. And I’m excited that Jaeger is coming back under the M&S umbrella. Both of those brands are classic British heritage brands. My mam had a few Jaeger pieces for special occasions when I was a child, and the quality was always great. And even though I’m in the US now, I have my mam ship me M&S underwear because of the quality too.

I lost my mother in January. It left a great hole in my heart as I had been caring for her for over 3 years. There are morning when I wake, that I forget she is gone, then it hits me all over again. I have found that working part time helps in the healing, as it give me something else to think about. I do not think you ever get over the loss of your parents, but I do think that over time, you begin to remember the good time and that helps in the healing.

I really like all of these looks. Unlike many of you, I loved the camel coat with the heels & the matching sweater. Very elegant. I remain in awe of the Duchess’s matching of sweater with coat when they come from different companies! And while I don’t particularly like the intense green of the jacket, it worked when saw only a little on a zoom!

Like all WKW posters, thinking of you and yours at this sad time following the loss of your mother. I hope the special time spent together while your mother was in hospice care will bring comfort to you in the weeks ahead.

We all missed you and thank you for the catch-up posts. They were all quite ‘professional’ looks which I quite liked. I think the camel coat looked better with the boots; being so long, it gives a somewhat unbalanced look with court shoes. I could be wrong but thought those caramel coloured suede shoes had been worn before, although I cannot recall when/where at the moment.

I have to agree with an earlier post about the ‘plastic’ clothing – to be avoided if at all possible, especially nylon in a jumper…..

Dear Susan, It is wonderful to have you back again and I hope you took as much time as you needed to transition to life without your mother. Even though none of us knew your mother, I believe that children reflect values taught by their parents. It is obvious by observing your kindness, fairness, integrity and work ethic, that your mother taught you so many valuable lessons. May your sadness one day be replaced by fond memories of this special lady.

I wasn’t sure about commenting on Kate’s outfits, but then figured that you’d taken the time to bring them to us, so it was important to acknowledge that.

*Camel coat is a classic and shoes and purse are beautiful. However, I like a coat of that length better with boots. I would also have preferred a contrasting colour underneath.
*St. Patrick’s Day blazer is shorter than I would like, especially with Kate’s long torso, but of course we can’t see the length on her. It is a fine shade of green, although not a natural fibre in sight.
*The pink coat is a wonderful colour and style for the approaching spring. I’d like it better with a black sweater underneath, or a navy top and pants and would prefer slightly shorter, more tapered pants.
*Pink blouse has a beautiful print. Earrings coordinate well. As always, the fussy, pussy bow means I can’t give it full approval.
Once again we can be impressed with Willam and Kate’s sense of duty to spread good will.

I really like all the outfits that were covered in this post. One of the reason I love reading this site is discovering new brands. I love that Max & Co coat, especially the pink version but I would also love to have the blue or yellow in my closet. I think the price for that coat is actually quite reasonable since it’s 100% wool and in the Max Mara family of brands (in my experience their quality is very good, I have a wool jacket I wear regularly from their Weekend line that is ten years old and it still looks great).

I avoid plastic fabrics (yes, I know even this coat is lined in polyester but that’s almost impossible to avoid unless you are buying very, very high end clothes). It is so hard to find coats, jackets, and sweaters that are not blended with plastic fibres (polyester, acrylic, etc.). Even at brands like Hobbs, Reiss, or LK Bennett now most of their “wool coats” are tops 80% wool in most cases, and the prices are not reflective of fabric that contains a fair amount of plastic in my opinion. I really like the classic look of the camel sweater and I love the colour of the green blazer, but I wouldn’t buy either because the former is 40% nylon and the latter is basically all plastic. I’ll keep my eye out for plastic free options.

So when I find a coat or sweater I really like in wool or cotton I tend to snap it up in a couple of different colours. I own the Hambleden sweater in the azalea pink Kate is wearing (the colour is so pretty in real life!) and also in white. I initially bought the Abercorn cardigan in the azalea pink and the blue and was so happy with it I ordered Hambelden sweater when I saw it was made in the same fabric. The necklines on both are so pretty and feminine, I am really enjoying the current trend of ornate necklines featuring scallop details and collars. If you are thinking about ordering either the of these sweaters I highly recommend them, they are so soft (70% cotton, 30% wool). I was really impressed with the quality. For me a US 6/UK 10 fit true to size.

      Dear BerryRose,
How very nice to read that you are interested in clothing without plastic fabrics. For me this is an important issue, too, and I have the feeling it’s getting harder and harder to find something, and even high-priced designers (not that I could afford it, but I like to have look ;-)) now make so much out of polyester, viscose (I know that’s not exactly plastic, but still chemically made), etc. Thanks for your tip on sweaters and cardigans, I’ll definitely look into that.
      Warm wishes,
      Gioia

I am so, so sorry for your loss, Susan. I pray that you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Honestly I’m not a big fan of most of these outfits. For one thing, the coats are too long! Even for her as she’s tall for a woman. They just swallow her whole.

Also not a fan of the all-one shade look, though the pink looks far better on her than the tan.

And the apple green is too bright for her.

    Just my personal opinion😂

My favourite, favourite outfit has to be the International Women’s Day top. I do so like the tie at the neck, and the colour suited her well.

I hope to see it in the future.

So sorry to hear about your mom, and thinking of you.

I like how Kate is getting into monochromatic looks. The collar on the pink Boden jumper is too little-girly for me, but it was a cute choice for a school visit.

That green blazer is really something. And affordable! I hope we see it on her again.

Kate looks so polished yet relaxed. I love all these looks. My only comment is on the length of the coat sleeves on both long coats. The sleeves seem a teensy bit too short. I probably only notice because I have long arms and sleeves that are not quite long enough are always an issue. I’m wondering if this is a problem for Kate or if she is purposely having them tailored a bit shorter to show off bracelets or for some other reason?

These are fabulous looks- she has restyled herself and looks very grown up and sophisticated.
I love her hair long with smooth waves! She looks gorgeous. I really like how she has been matching her coats so beautifully- a monocromatic look is a real statement.

I thought that Kate looked lovely for all of these engagements. I especially loved the green jacket from Zara, I hope we get to see it again. I also really liked the pink coat with the Boden sweater. My only quibble is those trousers, way too long!

So sorry to hear of your loss, Susan, but glad to have you back. Of all these looks, I like the bright green blazer the best. It can be dressed up or down, and it’s affordable. I’m not as much a fan of the bright pink coat, which doesn’t suit her coloring as well as the paler pink blouse.
