The Princess of Wales in Familiar Styles for Christmas Day at Sandringham – UPDATED

The Princess of Wales in Familiar Styles for Christmas Day at Sandringham – UPDATED

The Wales family joined other royals for the traditional Christmas Day walk to church at Sandringham.

There was a full contingent of royal family members at St. Mary Magdalene today, led by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

St. Mary Magdalene is Sandringham’s parish church. The crowd of well-wishers was large, with loads of people lined up eager to see the royals.

We learn more about the service from The Daily Mail.

Crowds were given copies of the order of service, conducted at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham, conducted by the Rector Rev Canon Dr Paul Rhys Williams.

Hymns included O Come All Ye Faithful, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. The service also included The Lord’s Prayer.

And here you see Lady Sarah Chatto (on the far left), Princess Margaret’s daughter, with her brother, the Earl of Snowdon, David Armstrong-Jones. You also see Samuel and Arthur Chatto with their mother and uncle. I believe Major Jonny Thompson, the King’s senior equerry, is seen on the right. Per Rodrigo on X, the young woman with the family is artist Eleanor Ekserdjian, Samuel Chatto’s girlfriend.

Here is a video as the royals exited the church after today’s service.

The Princess spoke about cancer with some members of the crowd. The Daily Mail has more in this story.

Moments after she took a gift for Charlotte from a little girl, who she wished Merry Christmas, a woman who had worked for Macmillan Cancer Support told Kate: ‘I just wanted to say you are an inspiration to all the patients.’

The Princess of Wales replied: ‘The amount of people who have written this year is extraordinary and I think cancer just really does resonate with so many families. People like you are doing all the hard work out there. I’m hugely grateful.’

In this photo, you see the Princess hugging 73-year-old Karen Maclean, who said she has been dealing with cancer for twenty years.

More on the children and the walkabout from The Daily Mail’s story

In a sweet video from this morning, a very happy Louis had his hands full of gifts before another well-wisher offered him a Father Christmas headband. The young prince accepted the headband, politely thanked the person who gifted it and returned to his father and siblings.

Prince William, who was himself greeting well-wishers with enthusiasm, appeared amused by his youngest son’s haul and said: ‘You’ve got that as well’. But when the family started to move along the path, Louis appeared to struggle to keep hold of everything he had received. At that point, he returned to his father and sweetly asked: ‘Papa, can you carry some?’

Now for a quick overview of what some royal women were wearing, beginning with Queen Camilla. She wore a coat by Anna Valentine, accessorized with a Chanel handbag and boots by Russell and Bromley

The Duchess of Edinburgh was in Emilia Wickstead’s Kalonice Wrap Coatdress with Reiss boots and a Strathberry bag. Lady Louise sported a Jane Taylor beret that both she and her mother had worn before.

Princess Beatrice reportedly wore a coat from the Net-a-Porter for The King’s Foundation collection.

The collection is designed by students participating in the Modern Artisan education program, “designed to equip young artisans with the skills to succeed in a fast-paced digital landscape and produce luxury apparel collections to the highest standards.” More on her look from The Telegraph’s coverage

The Modern Artisan programme, run by The King’s Foundation and Net a Porter, trains emerging designers and makers to create a capsule of luxury and sustainable staples.

It follows Princess Beatrice’s visit to The King’s Foundation’s Future Textiles exhibition at the Garrison Chapel in November, where the Modern Artisan collection formed part of the display.

Princess Beatrice also wore Maje boots and a headband by Justine Bradley Hill Millinery

Zara Tindall’s coat was by The Fold, and she carried a Lalage Beaumont handbag, the Odette Mini.

Thank you to Royal Fashion Police and UFO No More for additional ID information today.

And now for our look at what Kate wore.

She was in the green Alexander McQueen coat first noted in January 2023, shown below. The tailored double-breasted design is fitted and midi-length with padded shoulders, peak lapels, button cuffs, front pocket flaps, and a defined waistline.

Beneath the coat, it looks like the Princess may have worn a sweater first noted in February 2022, believed to be the Boden Cashmere Crewneck (the current version is available here). Her black skirt today was pleated, so it could be the Zara style worn in October 2020 for the Hold Still community launch. The Princess carried her Grace Han Love Letter Top-Handle handbag ($2970).

We saw the return of the Princess’s Gina Foster ‘Meribel’ hat, a velour-felt beret with a perky bow.

The boots were also familiar, a bespoke pair by Gianvito Rossi most similar to the Piper Block Heel style ($1995).

The Princess wore a new pair of earrings by Robinson Pelham, the jeweler’s Daystar Blue Topaz style ($7676). The design features blue topaz stones and diamonds set in 14-carat gold, with thanks to Gabi for the ID.

The Princess wore her Halcyon Days Maya Torque Aquamarine bracelet (similar bracelet here) and what looked like her Cornelia James ‘Alice’ Merino Wool gloves. UPDATE DEC 27: The gloves worn by the Princess are the Imogen Merino Wool style ($174), *not* the Alice style. Thank you to a WKW friend for pointing out the error! (The photo montage has been changed to include the correct glove image.)

The Princess also appeared to be wearing a necklace(s) I didn’t recognize today. We only have a small glimpse of it.

UPDATE: I do not know who made the Blackwatch tartan scarf worn by the Princess. One possibility is the Edinburgh Cashmere Scarf ($53.99) sold by Heritage of Scotland, seen below left. Below right, a suggestion from Middleton Maven, the Made In Scotland Heritage Cashmere Scarf ($125) offered at Scottish retailer Kiltane

In these photos, you can see the very fine fringe on the edges of the scarf worn by the Princess. The photo on the right has been digitally lightened to better show the detail.

Also today, a look at the Christmas card released by the Wales family this year.

The card features a frame from the video released in September by the Princess of Wales announcing she finished her chemotherapy treatments. The video was shot by Will Warr in August in Norfolk.

And here is the King’s Christmas address as shared by Sky News.

I am sending Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah wishes to all celebrating the day!

Happy New Year, Susan! I love this church outfit from Catherine. I would also wear the pretty, rather than formal, new earrings with this outfit because they lift the whole look. Once again, I admire the management of the Wales family outfits. Someone on their team is thinking hard about how the family looks in photos.

Happy New Year, Susan and thank you very much for always keeping us up to date with Catherine. I thought she looked very well put together, I really like that green on her. I’m not sure how I feel about the entire family coordinating to that degree though and at the carol concert, too - it feels a bit twee.
