The Cambridge Family Gets Back to Nature at Chelsea Flower Show

The Duke and Duchess took their three children to explore the Back to Nature Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show today.

A closer look at the den, with thanks to Rebecca English of The Daily Mail for sharing her photos

This is the project Kate has been working on for several months, a garden in a woodland setting for families visiting the show to enjoy. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis looked like they had a terrific time while giving the garden a “test run” ahead of tomorrow’s official preview and Tuesday’s opening.

Kate has been vocal about her belief in the benefits the outdoors has on physical and mental health. More specifically, the Duchess has spoken of the impact that nature and the environment can have on childhood development. This quote is from an interview with Kate airing tomorrow on BBC One:

“I really feel that nature and being interactive outdoors has huge benefits on our physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for young children. I really hope that this woodland that we have created really inspires families, kids and communities to get outside, enjoy nature and the outdoors, and spend quality time together.”

Here is a video from Kensington Palace with some of the interview.

Part of the BBC’s Chelsea Flower Show coverage, the broadcast is on at 7:30 pm local time.

As many readers will recall, Kate has been working with landscape architects Andrée Davies and Adam White of Davies White Landscape Architects. Below, Princess Charlotte on the same swing we saw Kate trying out yesterday.

More from an Express story:

The royal children spent almost an hour in the Back To Nature Garden with their parents, letting their feet dangle over a stream and running around with excitement. The space, which Kate hopes will inspire families “to get outside” and “enjoy nature”, features a tree house, waterfall, rustic den and a campfire as well as tree stumps, stepping stones and a hollow log for children to play on.

Below, Prince Louis also giving the swing a try. I love the look on his face and his hand on William’s arm.

It turns out Kate has had some special helpers the past several months. More from a news release: “Over the past months, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have helped The Duchess gather moss, leaves and twigs to help decorate the RHS Back to Nature Garden. Hazel sticks collected by the family were also used to make the garden’s den.”

Mr. Porteous has also taken several of Prince George’s birthday photos and this shot of Prince Louis after his christening.

Now for our look at what Kate wore for today’s special visit to the Chelsea Flower Show. She appeared to be wearing a frock from a brand we’ve not seen her wear previously, & Other Stories. With thanks to Laura for another fab ID, it looks like the Floral Ruffled Maxi Dress ($119), now sold out.

The dress is done in a small floral print and features a relaxed silhouette long sleeves, front pockets, mandarin collar, waist belt, and the ruffled tier at the hem. Below, a closer look at that element as well as the three-button cuffs.

The fabric and lining are both 100% polyester; the garment can be machine washed.  The style is also available in a shorter length, the Floral Ruffled Mini-Dress ($69).

Kate accessorized with a new wedge, the Casteñer Carina style in brown suede ($170). The wedge espadrille has a jute toe and sole, the upper is done in suede and there are suede ankle ties. The heel cup is made of cotton; the height is 9cm, about 3.5″.

A big thank you to Danielle Stacey of Yahoo Style UK for the ID!

It looks like Kate was in another pair of earrings by UK brand Accessorize, the Polly Petal style.

The earrings are available at Next (£8, about $10) as well as on the UK Accessorize site, but not the US site. Many thanks to Sophia of Regal Replikate for the ID on these!

We’ll leave you with these two images. I received several messages and emails from people saying how much alike George and Louis look, and a few said the Prince Louis stance today reminded them of the Prince George first birthday photo seen on the left.

I always love it when Kate lets out her inner hippie! She gets so few occasions to really be free and casual with her wardrobe, but I suspect that if she wasn't royal she would wear dresses like this all the time and spend lots of time in her garden or going to farmers markets. I particularly loved her wardrobe on the India tour a few years ago. She looked really happy getting to go full on boho for a lot of that trip. It’s clear Kate loves the country and getting back to nature, and the kids look right at home playing in the garden. Little Louis looks so much like Kate! What a pretty baby he is.

It’s funny you should mention about the India tour! I too felt she looked the most comfortable in those clothes as well! I love this look on her and surround by her family! I much preferred this frock to the Erdem one she wore later with the Queen. The garden is beautiful!

Don't like the dress (l don't generally like any of Kate's flouncy dresses, I actually think they do very little for her) but love that she is in labels like & Other Stories/Massimo Dutti. I think she should look them out more often.

As Kate is usually never reluctant to wear her skinny jeans on casual or less formal engagements perhaps, as a few others have said, Charlotte herself really does prefer dresses? I cannot see that Kate would 'forbid' them on non-official occasions like this. And they certainly do not hamper Charlotte!

Great pictures of the family all round, very skillfully taken.
