The Princess in Casual Styles for UK Scouting Video – UPDATED

The Princess in Casual Styles for UK Scouting Video – UPDATED

This evening, Kensington Palace released a video featuring the Princess of Wales and the UK’s Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields.

In the short video, shot last month, the Princess is “…seen taking a stroll near the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake District last month with a group of Scouts from Cumbria and Stretford, Greater Manchester,” per this Hello story. The Princess has been Joint President of the Scouts since 2020, a position she shares with the Duke of Kent.

More from Stephanie Petit’s People article

The royal greeted the group by saying, “Hello, everyone! How are you all doing? Good?” and the video showed Kate crouched down to look at a map on the ground.

She said, “What’s so fantastic about Scouts is it’s the same foundations that have always been there, and despite how different the modern day world is now, actually, it still resonates with so many young people and it’s making such a massive difference to them.”

Kate also agreed that the skills learned by Scouts are “life skills” that can be applied at school, work and beyond.

The scouts are ages 10 – 15, and they were all working on their Naturalist badges. Below are the requirements for earning the badge. The Princess also says in the video, “I find it a very spiritual and very intense emotional reconnection, I suppose, these environments. Not everyone has that same relationship perhaps with nature, but it is so therefore meaningful for me as a place to balance and find a sort of sense of peace and reconnection in what is otherwise a very busy world.”

More about Mr. Fields, who became the UK’s chief scout in late 2024, from The Mirror’s coverage

The video marks the first time that Kate has met the new Chief Scout since his appointment. Born in Jamaica, Mr Fields came to the UK at the age of six. He grew up in inner city London without access to nature and said the Scouts made a “huge difference” to his life.

In the video, Mr. Fields says, “I think it’s really important for young people to have access to nature because it’s a space where they can push themselves, they can challenge themselves, they learn leadership skills, spend time making friends and those life-long really great memories that we all hold onto. And I think if we can do that, we’ll build up a generation who is passionate about our natural spaces and passionate about protecting them as well.”

We return to The Mirror’s story, quoting the Princess.

“It’s so beautiful because so many of the walks here you can see Lake Windermere because it is huge isn’t it?” She also asks them: “Look how hilly it is in here. Have you done any of these big mountains?”

One more photo of the Princess with some of the scouts.

And here is the full 2-minute video.

Now for a look at what Kate wore in the video.

It looks like she was in her G-STAR RAW Cargo Ultra-High Skinny Jeans (sold out, similar style available here, $70), seen in this photo as worn in May 2023 during the Coronation Weekend for the “Big Help Out.” You may recall this was a Wales family engagement, when they joined other volunteers renovating the 3rd Upton Scouts Hut in Slough, outside London.

She also wore the Bella Hoskyns Bomber Jacket (£385, about $500 at today’s exchange rates), first noted in the Mother’s Day photo released in 2024. The piece is done in an olive green color with ribbed charcoal trim at the waist and cuffs; it is lined in a quilted fabric. The jacket also has a Nehru collar with detachable trim, a hidden front zipper, and front pockets.

With thanks to Danielle via Middleton Maven, the Princess is wearing a sweater by Emilia Wickstead. It is the label’s Otis Cashfeel Cable Knit Sweater ($755) in the ‘sand’ colorway. The sweater is 100% wool with a relaxed fit at the shoulder and bust with a close-fit waist and ribbing at the waist, collar, and cuffs. The style is also offered in ivory.

The Princess wore her Berghaus Supalite II Boots (£185, about $245), a lightweight, waterproof style.

The cap looks like the Really Wild Clothing design called the Lindsey style (no longer available) in the ‘Tweed Moss Fleck’ colorway, a style the Princess has worn several times before. In this photo, you see her wearing it in March 2013 during volunteer training with the UK Scouts. (That is bread dough on her hands; the Duchess was making ‘bread twists’ during the training.) See the update below.

UPDATE APRIL 15: It looks like the Princess was not wearing her Really Wild cap but instead had on a newer hat. Middleton Maven suggests it could be the House of Bruar’s Ladies Tweed 8-Piece Cap ($87) in green herringbone, shown below right. It is called the “8-Piece” because it is “constructed of eight skillfully sewn panels.”  We saw the return of the Princess’s Spells of Love Twisted Hoop Earrings (£60, roughly $80 at today’s exchange rates). The earrings are sterling silver with 18K gold vermeil. They are shown below as worn on a previous occasion.

Great outfit for the occasion. It gets chilly and windy up on those exposed areas - I’d have had to get gloves or mittens out as well!! That bomber jacket looks exceedingly snugly and warm, and I always appreciate it when Catherine wears British brands.

This is a great casual, yet put together, outfit for Kate. I love the hat and think she wears it well. It’s wonderful to see Kate looking so healthy, relaxed and happy!

It’s wonderful to see Catherine out looking so well and full of beans, it’s also a great treat to meet the new chief Scout who looks as keen on the great outdoors as the Princess herself. They have chosen a very beautiful part of the country in which to meet.

Catherine has clearly not lost her enthusiasm for fashion textures and contrasts in her comfy-looking outfit. I think the new Emilia Wickstead jumper is very pretty, but I don’t find the colour flattering. I think Catherine is a little careless with her neutrals and doesn’t appreciate how draining the wrong shade might be. But she has more than made up for it in the strong earth browns of her cap and jacket, both very distinctive in shape. The cap has a splendid dressy bold crown to it, which makes it quite dashing, and the Bella Hoskyns bomber jacket style sits well on Catherine’s beanpole frame, where for some of us it could be an inches-adding disaster. I like the subtle contrast trim on waist and cuffs which helps lighten the look.

Glad to see the G-Star cargo pants are serving well and looking just as comfortable as ever, though perhaps the pocket details are a shade fussy on top of all that’s going on above. Very glad she has comfy Berghaus boots for outdoors and welcome the return of the charming Spells of Love hoops. I was wearing them myself just the other day, about the only hoops I can still get on. They are very nicely made.

@ElizaMo, your comment "a little careless with her neutrals" made me smile and has been added to my own stock of colloquial language. I'm not a fan of this neutral on Catherine either. I wondered if it's too similar to her skin tone, but then I checked and the model on Emelia Wickstead's own website looks similar. So then I wondered if it is just my own taste. All this has got me thinking about what good neutral choices mean. Certainly whatever the fashion they should give the wearer a lift and not take over as I see here. I can understand why Catherine overlooked the tone to take the opportunity to wear an otherwise beautifiully warm textured, cropped Wickstead piece.

@ElizaMo, Definitely intriguing , we will have to wait for further development and see if it trends into the summer .

@Debs, I find it interesting that so much attention is given to the contrasts. It was the same with other recent outfits, like the one to the National Portrait Gallery with the children, where she actually busted out a new jacket albeit in sober colours.

@ElizaMo, I really liked the Caramel jumper on Catherine and am enjoying her experimenting with monochromatic dressing . As you say the different textures and shades come into play and it gives quite a visual statement in an non intrusive way if that makes any sense ? Rather like she is apparently hoping that her outfits take second place to her work I suppose .

Great just to see her and in such a beautiful setting with the weather playing along too 💚
