Summer Styles from Some of Kate’s Favorite Designers

We are back with a look at some spring and summer styles created by a few of Kate’s favored brands.

We begin with Emilia Wickstead, showing the Tallulah Metallic Wave-Ribbed Top ($1507 at Matches Fashion) in a wonderful fabric, a Lurex-weave that looks outstanding for formal functions.

Below, the matching Tallulah Metallic Midi Skirt ($1123, also at Matches Fashion) with its deep split up the front.

Here you have another look at the Presley Dress, this one done in that metallic silvery-grey, ($1937 at Matches Fashion).

Below, the Silk L Finale dress in a vivid bubble gum pink, this is actually a winter piece, but one I did love, We show it at Stylebop, where it was originally $5838, the dress is now 50% off, selling for $2919. Some may recognize this as the dress worn by actress Allison Williams for the 2014 Oscars.

While not for your trusty correspondent, jumpsuits are popular this summer. Below, Ms. Wickstead’s Satin Jumpsuit in white ($2105).

There are a few other wintertime styles that are bargains at Stylebop: the boxy Wool F Jacket (originally $1798, now $1078) and matching Wool F Trousers, with a high waist and hidden back zip (initially priced at $692, now $484).

Now for a quick survey of Max Mara summertime styles. We begin with a Linen and Cotton Duster in midnight blue (£390) and the Zeo Stretch Cotton Trench coat (£500) in sand, but also available in black.

Next, the Sunny ‘Bray’ Dress in yellow (it is also offered in red), crafted from a silk/linen material in a satin finish, and the Giro Dress in azure. Both frocks are from the Max Mara Weekend collection.

Here is a Georgette Dress (£445) that appears fairly shapeless, but somehow I see Kate liking the pleated portion of the frock and making the style work.

More Max Mara fashions, from left to right: the ‘Dinar’ Wrap Detail Jersey Dress ($695), Agi A-Line Midi Dress ($895) and Valzer Ruched Jersey Dress in light grey ($675), and the Micena Short Sleeve Print Jersey dress ($745). All of these are as shown at Nordstrom.

The Orione Silk Georgette Dress has a soft and summery feel (£720, roughly $1117), on the right we have the Nalut Cotton Jacquard Princess Dress (£360, about $560)  in another vibrant pink shade.

Also from Max Mara, the bright yellow Cotton Poplin Calmi dress (£305).

Our final designer is Alexander McQueen.  Working from left to right we see the Leaf Crepe Peplum Jacket (on sale for $1604.98, originally $2675) and the Short Sleeve Leaf Crepe Dress in bougainvillea (initially sold at $1985, the dress is now $1190.98). Obviously the pink dress is too short for Kate as it is shown, but as all of her pieces by this brand are bespoke, it wouldn’t be difficult to create a longer version. Next, a deceptively simple Front Zip Leaf Crepe Dress in black ($1935), followed by the Side Ruffle V-Neck Dress ($2385).

At Net-a-Porter McQueen styles include the Ivory Crepe Jacket (originally $3595, now $1348) and Cotton Piqué Shirt Dress in white (selling at 60% off its original retail price of $1975, the dress is now $790).

From the pre-spring/summer collection, this is the Embossed Cut Out Flower Jacquard 1/2-Circle Knee Dress. Originally selling at $2675, the dress is 40% off at Alexander McQueen, now priced at $1605, it is actually a jersey knit. .

Another knit piece, the Contrast Corset 1/2 Circle Knee Dress, from the pre-spring/summer collection at Alexander McQueen. It is the sort of thing the Duchess could have on under a coat that we would be struggling to identify. This item is also discounted 40%, it is now $1485, (its original cost was $2475).

Pieces from the hipper, more youthful (and lower-priced) McQ by Alexander McQueen line include the Printed Body-Con Sheath Dress ($595) and the Pleated Fit and Flare Dress ( $685), both are shown at Saks.

Two LBDs from McQueen: first, the One-Shoulder Peplum Crepe Dress ($3445 at Matches Fashion), unfortunately this one just keeps saying “seat belt” to me.

Our second little black dress from Alexander McQueen is the label’s Ruffled Silk-Chiffon Dress ($4550 at Matches Fashion).

That wraps up today’s look at styles from this spring summer collections.

A reminder that Saturday is Trooping the Colour; many expect Kate to be part of this year’s event. Things officially get underway at 10am in London, that is 5am EDT/2am PDT. There is even some discussion we might also see Prince George on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the fly-past, which happens at precisely 1pm (6am on the East Coast, 3am PDT). Yours truly will be posting late on Saturday as I will be out of town.

I know this blog is about What Kate Wore but if anyone is still interested in What Sofia Wore the new Princess in Sweden on her wedding day they can go to Royalty.nu, then scroll down to More Royal News and then click Sweden. Look for June 13th Swedish Royal Wedding video (10 Hours). The program which featured the Royal Wedding is still available for viewing (in Swedish) but one can see what the new Princess wore on her wedding day and view the ceremony, carriage ride and reception including dinner and dancing. It was beautiful and fun to watch. You don't have to understand the language though some of the ceremony and reception was in English to enjoy this and you can fast forward through the 10 hours and view what you like.

Yes, that McQueen screams seat belt, but (with appropriate modifications to the skirt, it could be a nice backdrop for an order's sash...just saying.

I can't be the only person who thinks that the Emilia Wickstead Tallulah Metallic Midi Skirt and Striped Silk Pencil Skirt are majorly unflattering, can I?

I think those two skirts would work if they were shorter. This is a case in which, as happens so often, proportion can make a huge difference. Even on tall, long-legged models, that length doesn't always work well and can look quite dowdy on most women. However, the removal of several inches of fabric, perhaps to just below knee length, would leave the skirts looking more chic and sophisticated -- and much more flattering.

Wickstead's been showing longish skirts and dresses in recent years; they have something of a 50's feel. The designs are elegantly feminine, but unfortunately, the lengths just aren't going to suit a great many people.

The other problem is that the metallic skirt and jacket worn together are just too much, whereas worn separately, with non-metallic pieces, they would work. This is another type of proportion issue, one of the "less is more" variety.

Nope! Right with you on both counts -- think both are ideas which didn't quite make it from theory to wearable practice :-)

I love the Alexander McQueen dresses. My favorite was the white with red.

To me, it is nigh impossible for Alexander McQueen to create something that doesn't give me grabby hands. Love, love, love McQueen.

I feel like we wouldn't be surprised if we see Kate in something similar to the McQueen Side Ruffle V-Neck Dress in a lighter colorway for the christening.

Thanks for such a feast of dresses. I do like the tailoring and fabrics on the Wickstead though I’m not keen on longer skirts. In these fabrics the length might be a little less heavy to look at although those wicked slits would leave little to the imagination. The pearly stripe looks fabulous in the full-length evening gown.

The outsize trend seems to be ballooning merrily in the sheath dresses which I fear look prettier being modelled than in real life though the soft fabrics might help. The full length Milly just does not work for me, almost a marquee size tent, and the pink midi dress again is not an easy one to carry off away from studio lighting et al.

Personally I’m a fan of the pocket belt on the smocked organza as I think it adds life to an overdose of monochrome –sorry! Though I’m right with you on jumpsuits – a bit too boiler-maintenance for my taste.

The accessible MaxMara look a lot more like styles Kate might pick, the pink jacquard is fun with the embellishments. I can’t see Kate being in too much hurry to test drive another full-skirted bright yellow shirtdress just yet, though I can certainly see her heading straight to the rack with those classic duster jackets. The navy looks very smart.

The Mcqueen tailoring also looks right up her street – in particular the pretty Cut-out Flower Jacquard and that snappy Body-Con Sheath. I love your comment about the seat belt – I don’t think I could see that one any other way now. I think the accompanying black ruffled silk-chiffon more or less says old household dusters to me!

Boiler maintenance, haha!! Love it, and so true - no, no, NO to jumpsuits.
