Kate Mixes Old and New for Rugby Match

Following this morning’s engagement for World Mental Health Day, the Cambridges made a quick change of clothes so they could get to the Wales vs. Australia rugby match.

Two disadvantages facing many photographers at this afternoon’s match: darkness and distance, making it difficult to shoot stellar pictures.i-Images

Kate was as animated at this match as she has been at many previous sporting events.

William was attending in his role as Vice-Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.

You can just about see his Welsh Rugby Union scarf.

Ultimately the match did not turn out in Wales favor.

Some will have recognized Kate’s ‘Delaney’ jacket from Reiss, previously seen for an engagement at Shooting Star Children’s Hospice in December of 2013.

This offers a good look at the detailing on the back of the piece, especially the area just above the waistline.Reiss/Splash News

Underneath the jacket Kate wore a black or navy turtleneck; my guess is that it’s black. From what we could see her scarf was maroon or burgundy.

Kate wore her trusty Aquatalia Rhumba boots for the first time in many months. As we’ve written in previous posts, Aquatalia has discontinued the style; with the exception of Russell & Bromley in the UK, the boot is now very difficult to find.  The only retailer with any kind of inventory is Jildor Shoes, where the Rhumba is $725.

In Canada Hudson’s Bay has the boot in black just a few sizes; it is on sale for $596, that is roughly $460 USD. If interested in the boot in brown suede, Neiman Marcus Last Call has it in very limited sizes, it is on sale for $398. Lord and Taylor also has the Rhumba in brown in a few sizes, it is on sale for $616 (if you order this holiday weekend shipping is free). Finally, we found very limited inventory at Walin and Wolff.

Kate also carried her Tod’s D-bag in grey; it is a piece the Duchess has had for years. This precise style is no longer available, below we show the small D-Bow bag currently offered at Tod’s.

Kate’s style is done in the semi-glossy leather, it is also available in the small size at the Luxer (an authorized retailer). If interested in the medium size, Farfetch has it in pebbled leather.

The Duchess kept on the earrings she wore for this morning’s engagement, her new Kiki McDonough ‘Lauren’ yellow gold and pave diamond pair.

The earrings are priced at £2200, just about $3400 at today’s exchange rates. (Please see our editor’s note below about the earrings.) They are offered in a variety of metals and finishes.

There are pendants in the new collection as well.

It was a delight to see Kate at two engagements this weekend.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Kiki McDonough initially thought Kate’s earrings were the Lauren Yellow Gold Leaf Earrings, but it was ultimately determined they were the pavé diamond pair. The post has been edited to reflect the newer information.

I don't mind this outfit. It's not really an official engagement - more like date night with the husband. I'm imaging this is how she might dress on a private casual night out. I like the color and structure of the back of the jacket. Much better wear than the last time. Love the purse. Not in love with the earrings, especially with this ensemble. A little too precious and sweet.

This jacket has to go :( It is just too matronly, I really don't like it. What is up with this outfit? The colors are all over the place, nothing matches. I would like a shorter more nipped in jacket and match the scarf color either with the jacket or with the shoes. Also, I don't know if it's changed recently or I'm just noticing it now but her eye makeup is WAY overdone. The past few posts where you see her in a crowd, the makeup stands out, she is more "done" then the other women in the audience. She is so, so pretty and naturally so, there is no need for all that.

I respectfully don't understand how an outfit that is totally black and grey doesn't match? The red scarf was clearly worn only as a way to show support for William's favorite team (see how so many in the crowd were also sporting red scarves), so I don't really consider that to be part of the outfit. Black boots, jeans, and sweater, paired with a grey bag and jacket---it doesn't get much more "matchy" than that in my opinion. In the photos on this site, she is mostly surrounded by men, so it is hard to tell if she is indeed more done than the other ladies in the crowd when it comes to makeup, but it is safe to say that she is also the only woman in the entire crowd whose look will be dissected and analyzed to this degree. I suspect that is why she is so careful with her makeup at what might otherwise be a casual outing.

I'm very surprised that she has not hired a makeup artist after all this time. I understand that she likes to do it herself, but she could really use some professional guidance.

I can't find any sort of harmony in this outfit. The boots are black, the purse is grey, the jacket is a soft blue/grey. The scarf around her neck looks to be a burgundy colour. The earrings, although beautiful, are far to elegant and dressy for a sporting event. Every item Kate is wearing is individually quite wonderful...but together they just look mismatched.

Black and gray work together perfectly, as do different shades of gray. The burgundy scarf adds a touch of needed color. She doesn't need to look matchy-matchy, especially in a casual outfit. I consider that it's best for women NOT to try to match every shade in an outfit. That tends to come off as a bit overdone, in my opinion, outside of a fashion show or magazine. Moreover, a relatively relaxed, not-too-calculated look is always going to be best for a sporting event.

I completely agree with you. I will go as far as to say that the light grey jacket and burgundy scarf clash.

Is the Duchess not wearing short Aquatalia boots?

I love seeing this beautiful elegant jacket again though I continue to feel it might only look its best worn with tailored pants. It's not an obvious first choice for a rugby match but then Kate has to juggle with the expectations around royal appearances.

The jeans worn this time are happily part-covered by those dear old Aquitalias and the shoe shape and heel look better with the jacket than the shorter boots last time.

It was fun to get the update on the earrings, clever sleuthing.! They still look fine being well sheltered among all that dark hair, the design range is lovely, though the leaf shape looks as much like a heart as anything, which in my view would border on 'twee'. I love that Tod bag and it's a most convenient blend with the Reiss jacket. All-in-all a good practical outfit.

Kate appears to wear white gold/ platinum earrings mainly for engagements and these curious gold numbers in her own time. I am biased as I don't like dangly and gold. She particularly does it against red, purple, plum etc. to catch the scarf in this instance. Just don't like it. It's a colour match for Christmas and Christmas only.
