Kate & William Are Expecting Their Third Child UPDATED

We have lovely news to share this morning: another little Prince or Princess is on the way for the Cambridge family.

Kensington Palace made the announcement via Twitter this morning.

Unfortunately, Kate is coping with Hyperemesis Gravidarum again; that necessitated cancellation of today’s engagement with Family Action at Hornsey Road Children’s Centre. It also forced the Duke and Duchess to share their good news earlier than hoped.

For those unfamiliar with HG, as it is referred to, here is a description from the Hyperemesis Education and Research Foundation:

is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the mom-to-be and the newborn(s).

Kate was so ill during her first pregnancy she had to be hospitalized. Below, the Duke and Duchess in December 2012, as they leave King Edward VII Hospital following Kate’s release from that facility.

During her second pregnancy, it was possible for doctors and other medical personnel to treat Kate at Kensington Palace and Anmer Hall, the family’s country estate. According to a Daily Mail story, Carole Middleton spent time with the Duchess today.

The Duchess of Cambridge spent the day with her mother as the world awoke to the news that she is expecting her third child.
Kate’s mother Carole Middleton was seen leaving Kensington Palace in a black Land Rover, where she had spent the day with her daughter, who is suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

UPDATE Tuesday, Sept 5 8 pm: There were several reports 2 weeks ago that Kate was hospitalized. The Sun reports that Kate spent time at a Scotland hospital when at Balmoral. From the story:

…morning sickness saw her rushed to Aberdeen hospital while visiting the Queen in Balmoral…

Just two weeks ago the effects of Kate Middleton’s third baby saw her taken to get a check-up, The Sun’s Royal Correspondent revealed

As of tonight (the 5th) I’m not aware this has been confirmed by Kensington Palace but will check tomorrow first thing.

It’s almost three years ago to the day when Kate and William announced they were expecting their second child, Princess Charlotte. That announcement was made September 8, 2014.

And Princess Charlotte was born May 2, 2015.

The Queen is said to be delighted at the news, as are Prince Charles & the Duchess of Cornwall.

You can hear Prince Harry’s reaction to the news about 17 seconds into this video from Richard Palmer of The Express. A third child puts Prince Harry sixth in the line of succession to the throne. If the baby is a boy, Princess Charlotte remains fourth in line,

Speculation about a third child stepped up during the family’s tour of Poland and Germany in July. The Duke and Duchess attended a business fair and were given a device designed to help sooth babies at times of upset and stress.

More from a Daily Mail story:

Kate speculated about having another child after she was offered a cuddly toy designed to soothe tiny babies during a reception in Warsaw – just hours before she donned a dazzling ivory gown for a garden party in the Queen’s honour.

Saying thank you for the present during the business event on Monday Kate turned to her husband, laughing, and said: ‘We will just have to have more babies.’

Family Action has sent their congratulations to the Duke and Duchess. The following is from a HuffPo UK story:

David Holmes CBE, chief executive of Family Action, who runs the children’s centre, said: “Family Action would like to give our warmest congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the wonderful news that they are expecting their third child.”

Holmes continued: ”We are honoured that The Duchess of Cambridge chose to visit Hornsey Road Children’s Centre.

“Although she is no longer able to attend today we entirely understand why this wasn’t possible. Once again, Family Action sends our warmest wishes to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their very happy news.”

Kate and William also had an embargoed engagement scheduled for Tuesday (the 5th); I would be surprised if the Duchess is able to participate in that event. As far as George’s first day of school goes on Thursday, that may well be a TBA.

British oddsmakers are already picking possibilities for the next royal baby’s name.  This list comes via The Telegraph, with thanks to Katie on Twitter for her link to the story:

The Telegraph has also put together a slide show, The Duchess of Cambridge’s 9 best quotes on pregnancy and motherhood.

Looking back at Kate’s maternity style, these were your three favorite looks for the Duchess when she was expecting Prince George. We did polls selecting for the first trimester, the second trimester and the third trimester.

You chose the McQ Black Watch Tartan coat worn when Kate returned to her old prep school, Saint Andrews Pangbourne in November 2012; a teal blue By Malene Birger coat worn on an engagement with HM and Prince Philip as they visited Baker Street Station; a polka dot dress by Topshop and Ralph Lauren jacket seen when Kate, William and Harry visited Warner Brothers Studios.

Here’s a little video Sky News put together.

I'm calling Princess Alexandra Carole Mary or Caroline Alexandra Mary if it's a girl, and Philip Henry Michael if it's a boy!

I hate to admit this, but her outfit/appearance when she left the hospital during her pregnancy with George is one of my favorite looks of hers. I think its the scarf/coat and the hair. I feel bad saying that since she was so sick!

I am not surprised at this news considering how much its been publicized that Kate has always wanted a third child. Of course that is just gossip but sometimes gossip can be well-sourced, you know?

My guess is Alice if its a girl. It wont be Elizabeth or Diana since they used those names for Charlotte (although I know they could repeat part of the name if they wanted.) If its a boy I would say Spencer could be a part in it but my guess is that they will save Spencer for Harry to use if he wants.

My son is Spencer! Greatest name ever. I wanted to name my daughter Diana but my husband put his foot down. : )

Don't worry, you're not alone when it comes to loving that outfit - I think I am just amazed that Kate can look so put together even when feeling so awful. That coat is beautiful and there's just something about the flat boots I like compared to her usual Rhumbas. William's lovely flowers sure complement everything too!

Becky, perhaps the reason you like Kate's look when she was leaving the hospital during her pregnancy with George, is because she seems to be seeking comfy clothes...and rightly so. She is wearing flat boots, a simple coat and snugly scarf. The scarf by the way, matched William's attire. She has minimal makeup and a very easy pulled back hairstyle. No muss, no fuss. Given how awful she must have been feeling, she still put on a brave front for the cameras. On this day she was addressing the occasion as any of us might and we could all relate.

This is lovely news for this family and all of us! Would the Duke and Duchess have known she was pregnant when they were in Germany?

Good question - if she went full-term with Charlotte, the announcement would have been at about six weeks. It's possible she conceived after Germany - and given her struggles with HG, I can't imagine they would have risked cancelling the visit by trying for a third child before that commitment had concluded. That would mean that this announcement is very early in the pregnancy, but it's been the norm with George and Charlotte too.

I sure hope that Kate is feeling much better very soon, and that her doctors can successfully manage the HG quickly. What a terrible struggle, I just can't imagine. But my goodness, those two darling kids have certainly been worth the suffering. So very happy for the Cambridges.
