The Duchess Wears Roksanda for Sandringham Church Service

The Duchess was in a new coat and hat for church services this morning at Sandringham, the Queen’s Norfolk estate.

The Duke and Duchess joined HM for the morning service at the church of St. Mary Magdalene.

The church is where the royal family worships when at the estate. More about St. Mary Magdalene from the Sandringham website.

Sandringham Church is considered to be one of the finest carrstone buildings in existence and dates back in its present form to the 16th-century. The sumptuously decorated chancel with its carved angels frames the silver altar and reredos presented to Queen Alexandra by the American Rodman Wanamaker as a tribute to King Edward VII. He also presented her with the silver pulpit and a silver 17th-century Spanish processional cross.

A file photo of the church.

And from a Hello story:

St. Mary Magdalene – a.k.a. Sandringham Church – has been the go-to worship spot of the Royal Family and its staff since Queen Victoria’s reign, whether for prayer, baptisms or funerals.  Princess Eugenie and Princess Charlotte were both christened there, as was the Queen’s father, King George VI.  Lady Diana Spencer, who would eventually marry Prince Charles, was also baptized within its walls, in 1961.

Another view of the Cambridges this morning.

Also attending church today, the Duchess’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

The couple was also joined by several close friends, some of whom are godparents to the three Cambridge children.  Below, Thomas Van Straubenzee, one of Princess Charlotte’s godparents, with his fiancée Lucy Lanigan-O’Keeffe, who teaches outdoor learning and mindfulness at Thomas’s Battersea, where Prince George and Princess Charlotte attend school.  (Mr. Van Straubenzee was previously married to Lady Melissa Percy.)

Below right in the white shirt, print dress, and boots, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, one of Prince George’s godmothers, and her husband, David. Below left, you see Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, and her husband David, the Marquess of Cholmondeley (with the berry-colored scarf).

You may remember the June 2016 fundraiser for EACH the couple hosted at Houghton Hall, their Norfolk estate located just a few miles from Anmer Hall.

James Meade, another of Charlotte’s godparents, and his wife Lady Laura Marsham were also part of the group. Below you see Lady Laura with Kate.

Now for our look at what Kate wore to church this morning.

We begin with the Roksanda Denton Coat ($3405, most recently selling $1608), in a striking fabric that mixes midnight-blue and orange hues in a midweight wool blend.

The actual fabric content is 65% wool, 30% other, 10% polyamide.  The coat features a funnel neck and double-breasted design with distinctive bar-shaped hardware closures in a copper color. It also has lightly padded shoulders, front slit pockets, and a back vent. Made in England, the coat is fully lined in silk.  Many thanks to a savvy HRH Duchess Kate blog reader for identifying the garment, as well as Charlotte for sharing that information!

I believe this is a 2016 piece, and it was most recently carried at The Outnet, which generally has a good selection of Roksanda sale pieces.  (The Outnet is the discount site for Net-a-Porter). There is a special Roksanda X The Outnet collection launching January 24th with a percentage of proceeds going to Malaika, a charity supporting Congolese girls.

With thanks to Polka Popp on Twitter, it looks like Kate was wearing a Hicks and Brown hat, the brand’s Suffolk Fedora (£95, about $125) in wool felt, a water-resistant style in a classic silhouette, embellished with a pheasant feather wrap.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was seen in a Hicks and Brown fedora at the 2018 Royal Windsor Horse Show, shown here with daughter Lady Louise Windsor.

The brand was founded by sisters Alice Leet-Cook and Rosie Turner.

The duo explains on their site that “growing up we realised there was a mutual passion for design and textiles.  When launching our brand, we decided to incorporate the name of our family home, Hicks Farm.” A variety of retailers carries Hicks and Brown merchandise, and the company also does pop-up shops at equestrian events and country shows throughout the year.

UPDATE Jan. 7: In a story for People, Monique Jessen has more:

As to whether Sophie, who often wears fedora-style hats, recommended the brand to Kate, they can’t confirm. “There is a high possibility, but honestly we don’t know,” says Leet-Cook. “Kate’s team got in touch with us at the end of last year and we were just thrilled. We spent most of Sunday jumping around the room, over the moon once we saw she had actually worn it!”

The brand… has sold hundreds of hats in the 24 hours since Kate stepped out in their design, which she wore with an orange-and-blue flecked wool coat by Roksanda. “We have been working around the clock! We now have family members helping to pack the boxes,” says Leet-Cook. “It’s a real team effort and we don’t mind. It’s been incredible!” While the style is currently sold out, the hat is now on pre-order, with delivery expected in 5-6 weeks.

Kate’s boots look much like her dark brown  Zipkin style by Stuart Weitzman, first noted when worn in Denmark in November 2011 (shown below left).

She carried her ‘Kate’ bag in navy quilted leather by Jaeger (£150, no longer available).

The piece has a goldtone chain for carrying as a shoulder bag and was first noted at engagements in Nottingham with HM and Prince William in June 2012.

The Duchess wore her sapphire and diamond drop earrings, shown below as worn on a previous occasion.

Here is a look back at the recent ensembles worn by the Duchess for church services at Sandringham.

From left to right, the Duchess today; the blue Catherine Walker worn last year; the Moloh Turpin Tweed coat seen in January 2018; a Sportmax coat the Duchess wore in January 2017; and the Michael Kors suit seen in January 2016.  With the exception of today’s look and the Kors suit, all of the coats were repeated pieces.

UPDATE 2 Jan. 7: Several savvy commenters recognized Carole Middleton’s coat as a piece that has been worn previously. Below, you can see the Duchess’s mother in the coat at church services in Bucklebury on Christmas Day 2012.

This is now one of my all-time favorite walk-to-church-looks because I agree with many other commenters that it feels like it’s the real Kate on display! Absolutely love the hat and immediately purchased the same style for myself. It just arrived and and it is excellent quality for a reasonable price for a wool hat with natural feather details. If you live in a part of the country where you can wear dressy outdoor wear, as I do, I would highly recommend Hicks & Brown hats. I’m so glad Kate introduced us to this brand! One note to other shoppers: if you need to return a purchase to Hicks & Brown, the cost of the international shipping is on you. So measure your head twice and order once!

This outfit is very fun and young- great to see Kate wearing something that makes us remember she’s still a young woman. So many occasions demand she looks classic, regal and royal, which doesn’t always allow for fun fashion. The colors and texture of the coat (fuzzy orange and brown?), the beautiful hat, sleek boots, straight, loose hair- she’s having fun with fashion, and it looks great.

On a side note, I’m not actually a fan of the coat by itself. The colors are too odd for my taste. Perfect for autumn, and I do like it for a Sunday walk, with elegant brown boots and her cute, yet classic hat.

The fedora is back! Kate was often photographed in them while she was dating William. Great to see it back.

Individually the components are great, but the styling is quite surprising, and I’d rather be surprised than see a matchy match ensemble.

Overall I like this. Very different for Kate. Hat is terrific on her. Only quibble would be the quilted clutch. Something in smooth leather or suede would have been better. Also, with chain/strap missing it makes bag look cheap. A small top handled bag coordinating with the boots would have worked better for me.

I’m very happy with the hat, just not the trim with that busy weave on the coat. I love how the fedora’s vibrant blue pulls out the undertone of blue in the two-tone re/blue weave, which almost works in the way shot silk does. Shot wool, anyone?

I love that after so many years of watching Kate’s fashion, she can still surprise! The coat is such an interesting print and mix of colours, and bringing out the dark blue through the hat and clutch is an inspired choice. The brown boots and gloves feel off, especially against the navy, and don’t really match any of the colours in the coat. But I can’t think of a good substitute – navy boots (if in fact Kate does own a pair) might have been overkill.

A fun look overall and much better than her previous January church service outfits. Am a little sad to see the furry hats are still making the rounds in the Middleton family!

I like this coat and hat ensemble quite a bit. It is far different than the more color-blocked, appropriate things she wears to church and I’m glad she stepped into something a little different this time. The hat makes the outfit look a bit Aussie in style, which is very cool. She looks great!

I was wondering the same thing as a few posters about Carole Middleton’s hat. It looks like the same one Kate has worn to church previously.

I really, really like this. Somewhat because I love brown and navy together. Also because, while the coat colors make it a bit unusual, it is pulled together in a classic way. Not too far over the edge for my somewhat boring tastes. And everyone, including the DofC look so happy and relaxed.

Another question about Kate’s mother — is she wearing a coat and hat that her daughter has worn previously? They seem very similar. Mrs Middleton is a tall and slender woman- is it possible that they can share pieces?

Does anyone hear the sound of a mold breaking? I feel like with the past 2 church walks she has broken with her prim Duchess look and embraced a cozy and chic continental look. Her Christmas day grey coat with green accessories seemed something Czarina to me and I loved it.
This outfit looks so expensive, bold and sophisticated. Not that she doesn’t usually look expensive and sophisticated and so put together, but this brings it to a new level just by being different. I’m so so happy to see her stepping out in this way!

This is Kate’s weekend celebrations with friends & family for her birthday where Kate wore a coat with a beautiful combo of colors that brings out her artistic taste with a country chic fedora blue hat that looks great on her and love the whole look 💙. This new chic coat was created in 2016 and presume purchased, that means Kate finally had the right opportunity to wear a outfit that reflected the occasion. I believe we are going to see a lot more outfits previously made, because I have read somewhere you need 5 or so different outfits changes a day when attending Sandringham Christmas weekend festivities. I know if I was attending, I would have a few extra outfits/coats just in case the weather change or other factors. This modern look is a win! 🎊🎂

I think I am in the minority here. I think that nothing works together. One of the most miss-match look ever. I do not care for any of the accessories at all. Even the colors of each piece – the coat, the hat, the boots – are not attractive. Very disappointing!

I’m with you! While I can envision the silhouettes of the hat/coat/boots possibly working together in different colors/fabrics, the look as it stands includes a mishmash of colors, textures and details that, in combination with one another, create a big “got dressed in the dark” miss. It’s a baffling contrast to the other 99% of outings where the Duchess perfectly and purposefully combines each and every element of her look. Maybe this is the result of seeing one too many comments about playing it safe – comments I happen to completely disagree with. I think her “safe” looks are like watching a gymnast – the skill is in making it look easy, which it isn’t!!! When the Duchess “plays it safe” she is timeless, regal and she wears the outfit. In this case, the outfit wears her.

The Duchess does look very, very happy and at the end of the day that’s really all that matters! And I can see the appeal of taking chances in a world with so many expectations for what Catherine should show up wearing – cheers to that!

To be honest, I think Kate’s styling misses the mark fairly often. There is nothing wrong with most of her clothes (except the Erdems and the prissy, ruffly, neck bow dresses that I hate), but the way she styles them is often bad. It is either a mishmash of things that don’t go together, as here, or she takes something that is bland on the surface (one of her standard coatdresses for example), and styles it in a matronly way rather than age appropriately, like with interesting shoes and bags. Accessories really can elevate a look or bring it down. I think she should employ the services of a real stylist rather than just elevating her PA. If she is going to pay someone to fill the role, she should use someone with a good eye and a fashion background, imo.

Agree with you 100%! The coat, while beautifully fitted, just reads to me as muddy, I do not like the color combination at all. And none of the accessories go together. When Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, wore the same fedora going to church with the Queen right before Christmas, I thought it more appropriate for a horse show, not church.

I am not sure how I feel about the coat although, like most everything, it looks nice on Catherine. I do love love love the hat though. Pippa has worn fedoras, and I have always thought Catherine should try one. Also, I recall her trying on a Boden fedora at the opening of a charity shop, and I remember thinking she should buy it. ( I think it sold at an auction for a lot of money simply because she is pictured trying it on, and the money, I believe, went to charity.) It’s a good shape for her face, and I also think it is certainly appropriate for church service with HM.

I think this is a much more attractive and stylish ensemble than the one she wore to church on Christmas day. At first, I assumed this coat was Katherine Hooker (whose coats the duchess wore fairly often when first engaged/married) because of the lovely high cut and slim arm holes and sleeves. That is a tailoring trick that Hooker does often and I think it makes all coats look more figure flattering and less bulky. I was surprised to see that this was Roksanda.
I love the jaunty fedora, which is more flattering than some of the other hat styles she wears, and I want a pair of those boots! Since it is a 2016 item, I am wondering if this is a piece she has had for some time in her closet and only brought into public now?
Hair and makeup were lovely, as was the big smile on her face. My tiny quibble is that I woudl have worn brown suede gloves and a brown clutch, but that is just nitpicking. Overall I think Kate looked lovely and I hope we see her in more styles like this.

My own theory on past-year styles that make a debut years later is that they are the extras commissioned or purchased as back-up options for her tours. We know she takes extras on tour, and I think she has moved past the stage of shopping older styles to gain discount advantages.

A surprise sighting Such a pleasure! I adore this coat on her, so different than what she normally wears. So rich and textured with the right length and balance with the boots. I also loved her Christmas grey coat too. Maybe the hat in person has a different color blue than on my screen. But I think she looked sharp in it. But I do agree with other readers that the trim on the hat did not quite go with the coat. . Love the boots, and who does not like sapphires and diamonds? However maybe a more modern gold tone earring to pick up the unusual bottom detail on the coat would have been fun too. I also feel that a suede clutch would have worked better with the coat.

The coat is stunning, just stunning, although it reads as raspberry and blue to my eyes. I can see that the cobalt hat is meant to pick up the blue in the coat, but the darker blue of Williams coat seems like a better match to the blue in the coat.

I’ve been wishing and hoping that William would start wearing fedora hats – he would look so good in them. So I was surprised to see Kate in the fedora. She looks smashing in it, but I will keep hoping that William will bring back hats for men.

If curious about the piece Lindsay is referencing, the Katerina was worn in February 2011 for the christening of a lifeboat in Anglesey, the first formal engagement the couple had following the announcement of their own engagement. That link didn’t work for me, but I googled for the photos and upon reading one article I learned that particular piece has the insignia of the “Royal Welch Fusiliers” on it. I suppose an event with them would be our chance to see it again?

Well that’s an interesting hat! It’s outfits like this that make me wonder what Kate’s style would be like if she were just a famous fashionista and not a figure queen. She’d be quite a bit edgier I think and hats like this a fun glimpse into that alternate reality.

I totally agree! I think this is more Kate’s style. Her more “off-duty” looks tend to be more British country styles which I think this falls into as opposed to her “on-duty” looks which are much more prim and proper. I love this, and Kate is glowing in it.

I like this coat so much better than the one that Kate wore on Christmas Day. I found the grey to be very drab and the green accessories didn’t really help that much. The fabric of this coat have a country look…not quite tweed but giving that vibe. The copper closures are quite unique.

I have mixed feelings about the hat. While it too has a country look, I feel the fedora covers and overshadows Kate’s face too much. I do like the band of feathers, that are such a good colour match with the coat, that at first I thought the band was the same material as the coat. I would have preferred navy boots or shoes and navy gloves. There is no brown in the coat and I find that adding brown to the outfit doesn’t make sense.

I have enjoyed reading this blog for several years; but, have never commented. However, when I saw this gorgeous blue hat today and the beautifully contrasting coat I just couldn’t help myself. I think this look is absolutely stunning and I agree that Catherine’s half up do is perfect for this hat. I wish hats were more common in the United States because this is a color and style I would love to duplicate.
I learn so much from this wonderful site and from all the kind and thoughtful comments. I just want to thank you for such enjoyable and educational content.

What a surprise to have Kate showcase Roksanda Ilincic for a Sunday church outing, and showing such a typically imaginative use of fabric, texture and colour from that source. I’m glad Kate is sticking with a classic fitted line in many coats as it’s wise to stay with a silhouette that suits her while working on change via colour and cloth.

However, while I love the coat on its own to bits, including the bar-shaped closures, I’m not sure that Kate has quite nailed the styling. I only have minor quibbles and it goes without saying that were any other royal wearing this ensemble I’d likely go into raptures. I think Kate has once again fallen prey to the tendency of the Middleton ladies to add just one more detail where one less would make all the difference.

In this case I love the shape of the Hicks and Brown fedora on Kate, it looks truly sassy, but I find the textured hat band too much against a busy coat fabric, and would prefer one that was plain. I like that she carries a small Jaeger clutch, but not that it’s quilted, adding more texture where sleek and uncluttered could lend a touch of elan. I also think I spy bows on the wrists of the gloves which again is something I find a touch fussy, spoiling the clean lines of tailored sleeves.

But I love those Weizman Zipkins, they are such a great fit, the shoe really blends smoothly into the body of the boot without leaving an unsightly impression of a court shoe having taken up lodging inside a leather sock. The neat, sharp, tapered heel is perfection, the platform adds weight to balance the mid-length coat. And the overall outfit is anyway perfect for the occasion, since going to church typically leads to a touch of fussiness in dress.

I’m 100% there with you on the clutch. The quilted pattern is at odds with the rest of the ensemble, and I’m certain she owns a bag in blue suede closer to the shade of the hat or in brown closer to the gloves and boots. The 3rd shade of blue introduced on the clutch is not ideal.
But, I’m totally on board with the Kate’s choice of the hat. The coat calls for something a bit off-beat to me.

I love everything about this outfit. This style of hat reminds me of her British Vogue cover and it suits her perfectly. Very country chic and quintessentially Kate.

I love this look! I like the shape and fit of the coat and the colors are beautiful to me. I also like this fedora. Very becoming to the Duchess and so stylish. But the best accessory is William looking very dapper. The Duchess is glowing today. It looks like they have had a lovely holiday.

Love it! Very, very smart, gorgeous colour and silhouette. The hat very British and appropriate for Sandringham with the pheasant feathers. Catherine is glowing and appearing full of confidence. Quite the queen bee today aside from the actual Queen, radiant in purple, of course!

Coat is lovely, but I’m afraid I’m not a fan of the hat. There’s something about a fedora that always looks so outdated and slightly tacky to me. I think it’s hard to find an event where you can wear a fedora and have it look okay. Horse shows, yes. Church at Sandringham, not so much.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I think I’m more on the pulse of British formal/semi-formal wear from following Kate (versus “country wear”), and to me I can’t believe this hat would ever be in her Sunday rotation! It does look quite appropriate on Sophie…

I believe that Sophie, Countess of Wessex, actually wore a fedora to church (riding in the car with HM the queen) a week or so before Christmas. I think fedoras are appropriate for churce and I have to believe HM thinks so too, or they wouldn’t have been worn by two of her senior female in-laws in the space of a couple weeks.

I see what photo you’re referring to of Sophie. It looks okay, I guess, but I much prefer it as styled for the Winter Fair she attended. I think she just overall looks better in the style with shorter, simpler hair and the hat’s neutral color. Very different end result from Kate’s.

I love, love, love this coat and hat! I think this is so stylish and is such a youthful look for the Duchess. The only thing I would change would be the color of the boots and gloves to a deep brown. I think brown accessories would pair better with the orange and blue in the coat and the brown of the pheasant feathers on the hat. Overall a huge win!!

In one photo the gloves also look brown, like the boots but I agree, the black bag was not the right one for this outfit.

The hat looks quite a bright blue in some photos, darker in others. Either way, I like the style on her.

I wonder if the coat might’ve been a gift since it doesn’t look like something she’d normally wear. Love the hat and the feathers do coordinate nicely.

I have to giggle at how her headband trend has really taken off and she doesn’t even wear them any more.

I like the coat. I think it’s a departure for Kate but I like it. I do not like the hat. Sometimes outfits grow on me when I look at them enough, but not this one, unfortunately. I appreciate that she’s branching out style-wise, but I like her original style more than this ‘branch’, so to speak.

Looking SHARP. I’m not info fuzzy coats, so much, but I do appreciate the lines and the marvelous colors and marled effect. The hat is super-snazzy and a great match with the coat; she looks like a fashionista version of Ingrid Bergman at the end of Casablanca. The half-up, half-down hairdo is perfect for the look.

I recently thrifted a pair of high-heeled, knee high boots in black suede, and I adore them. I am always gratified when I see the duchess wearing something that I more or less have in my own closet.
